Ministers threatened to take three Tyneside councils to court if they do not begin implementing new clean air tolls on the area's roads by the end of this year. Newcastle, Gateshead, and North Tyneside councils unveiled major plans on Monday for new fees that could hit the region's drivers - either through a charge for high-polluting vehicles, or via tolls on three busy bridges across the River Tyne. It has now emerged that the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) wrote to the area's three council leaders in January to warn that they had missed deadlines to come up with plans to cut pollution and could face legal action if they do not make swift progress. The authorities were ordered by the Government in July 2017 to reduce emissions in certain hotspots where nitrogen dioxide levels are above legal limits - including part of the Central Motorway and the Coast Road - and were set a deadline of December 2018 to submit their final plans on how to achieve that. Ella Kissi-Debrah lived 25 metres from the South Circular Road in Lewisham in south east London – one of the capital’s busiest roads, and died in February 2013 after three years of seizures and 27 visits to hospital for asthma attacks. On Friday her family was given permission by the Attorney General to apply for a fresh inquest, after their lawyers said the original held in 2014 did not investigate the potential impact of air pollution. Two Saudi sisters found dead and duct-taped together on the banks of New York’s Hudson River were seen praying near the water hours before their bodies were found, in a baffling case that police say shows no signs of foul play. The sisters, Rotana Farea (22) and Tala Farea (16) were discovered on October 24 on the banks of the river, having gone missing two months previously from Fairfax, Virginia, where they lived with their family. 2 bound bodies found in NYC were missing Virginia sisters
Two bound-together bodies that washed up on shore along the Hudson River in New York City have been identified as missing sisters from Virginia. The New York Police Department says the bodies that were found Wednesday lying on rocks along the river were 22-year-old Rotana Farea and her 16-year-old sister, Tala Farea, both of Fairfax, Virginia. Tala was last seen Aug, 24, according to a posting on the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
