Experts have warned that a 'devastating' spike in coronavirus cases is about to hit the UK this winter , made worse by a lack of testing of the new immune-evasive variants. The UK is 'blind' to the new immune-evasive Covid variants that have been brewing, creating the 'perfect' storm for a devastating wave, according to the health leaders. According to the latest figures, Covid-19 infections in the UK have risen 14 per cent - the biggest increase since the summer. While there is no clear evidence of an autumn Covid wave starting, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that a total of 1.1 million people in private households tested positive for covid, covering the seven days to September 17 in England and the week to September 20. Further to this, with a new dominant symptom being reported , Professor Tim Spector, co-founder of the Covid ZOE app , says that people who now get the previous presiding symptoms rule out having covid completely. The UK is already in a ‘devastating’ new Covid wave that could ruin an already browbeaten NHS, experts say. Covid cases crept up by 14% last week, with more than 1.1 million people testing positive, according to the Office for National Statistics . What’s causing the new wave is unclear, but experts feel the government’s ‘wrong’ list of Covid symptoms means people may be unknowingly spreading the virus without realising it. Professor Tim Spector, a co-founder of the Zoe Health Study, a phone app that tracks the spread of Covid, told The Independent : ‘It looks like we’re in the start of the next wave and this time it’s affected older people slightly earlier than the last wave.’ Professor Spector warned that official data may seem high but it underscores the problem, given that testing is not as common. And crucially, the Covid virus the world is dealing with today isn’t the same as the one that first broke out in 2020. ‘Many people are still using the … [Read more...] about UK ‘at start of new Covid wave that could devastate the NHS’

The University Hospital of Wales ' accident and emergency department is overcrowded, "visibly dirty" and poorly maintained, a new inspection has found. Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) visited the Cardiff-based emergency unit and assessment unit between June 20 and 22 and found a series of failings, meaning the safety and dignity of patients cannot be guaranteed. One of the complaints was that there was insufficient seating for the amount of people attending the emergency unit. This led to one patient sitting on the floor and another sitting on bins in a corridor. In the neighbouring assessment unit, it discovered patients were so close to each other, that it sometimes compromised their dignity and privacy. In waiting areas, some patients spent hours at a time in high-backed chairs, which weren't suitable for resting for long periods of time or sleeping. Inspectors identified one person who had spent the night using an arrangement of two high-backed chairs that did … [Read more...] about Patients sit on bins at overcrowded, ‘visibly dirty’, struggling flagship A&E unit
