Austria: Karl Nehammer sworn in as new chancellor

January 6, 2021 by www.dw.com

Karl Nehammer was sworn in as Austrian chancellor by President Alexander Van der Bellen on Monday in a ceremony in Vienna's Hofburg Palace as the country's third leader in three months. He now faces the task of trying to free the coalition government from the taint of months of political turmoil and scandal and of creating conditions conducive to lifting the country's coronavirus lockdown. Nehammer, 49, from the ruling conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), was formerly the country's interior minister. Why is Nehammer taking power? Outgoing Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg offered his resignation on Thursday. One day later, the ÖVP nominated Nehammer as new party head — succeeding former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in the position — and chancellor. Kurz's resignation as party leader and declared departure from politics also came on Thursday. Previously, he had stepped down as chancellor in October amid a corruption scandal that saw his offices searched in a police … [Read more...] about Austria: Karl Nehammer sworn in as new chancellor

Man shows how to spot camouflaged ATM skimmer in viral clip

May 13, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A video that first went viral in 2016 for exposing an ATM skimmer proved to still be useful to viewers after it went viral on the Reddit forum "Interesting as F**k." Ben Tedesco posted the video of himself finding a skimmer while he was at an ATM in Vienna, Austria, and it was viewed more than 23 million times on YouTube. Reddit user u/c**pool uploaded the video on Reddit where it amassed more than 30,000 votes and prompted viewers to write about their experience with the devices. Skimmers are not new, and they've been used to steal information from people for years, but there are steps people can take to protect themselves. Forbes reported that finding a device may require an examination of the machine to find any alignment issues or whether the card reader can be removed from it. "Authentic card readers are robustly manufactured, meaning if any part of the card reader can easily move around, then it's probably been installed illegally by a thief," the piece by … [Read more...] about Man shows how to spot camouflaged ATM skimmer in viral clip

Major Roger Woodiwiss, who has died aged 92, was the Operations Officer for 22nd Special Air Service Regiment (22 SAS) from 1973 to 1976. Reporting in turn to two future Directors of Special Forces, Lieutenant Colonel (later General Sir) Peter de la Billière and Lieutenant Colonel (later Major General) Tony Jeapes, he was responsible for the military preparation and political direction of SAS squadrons in operations across the world. On several occasions, he was responsible for the control of two squadrons on active service and the operations of three teams, all at the same time, all in different countries and often in different continents. May 13, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

AMERICA'S Got Talent Extreme has been hit with serious violations in a federal investigation after stuntman Jonathan Goodwin was left paralyzed from a 30-foot fall on set. In a statement given exclusively to The Sun, the Department of Labor's occupational safety division said: "OSHA has completed the investigation into this horrific incident involving Marathon Productions, Inc. and issued a citation on April 13, 2022 for two Serious violations." Just last week the popular 42-year-old stuntman said the October 2021 accident during AGT Extreme's rehearsals in Georgia left him paralyzed. The basis for citations in OSHA's report is that "an employee was exposed to a fall hazard of approximately 30-feet to ground level, in that; the employer did not ensure an adequately sized airbag or (safety net) was used and correctly positioned to protect the employee from contacting the lower ground level." The basis of the first citation was that the employer did not provide walking or … [Read more...] about AGT’s production hit with ‘serious federal violations’ after Jonathan Goodwin left paralyzed in horrific stunt accident

The unprecedented rise in journalist slayings — and what can be done to stop them

January 11, 2022 by www.dw.com

To maintain freedom of the press, which is essential for democracy, journalists must be able to safely complete their jobs. Yet media workers are increasingly facing danger and even death, particularly in conflict zones and in some countries around the world. Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran correspondent reporting for Al Jazeera, was fatally shot Wednesday while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank. Abu Akleh's colleague Ali Samoudi was also shot in the back and wounded during the incident, according to Al Jazeera. It was not immediately clear where the gunfire came from. Abu Akleh's killing has added to a death toll of as many as 28 media staff killed because of their work this year alone, according to the International Press Institute. Journalists "are coming under increasing attack around the world, and this includes reporting in conflict zones," confirms Scott Griffen, deputy director of the International Press Institute, a global press freedom organization … [Read more...] about The unprecedented rise in journalist slayings — and what can be done to stop them

Vladimir Putin has made his biggest blunder yet

May 12, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

If anybody doubted Vladimir Putin’s capacity for miscalculation, the decision of Finland to apply for Nato membership, almost certainly to be followed by Sweden, is probably his biggest blunder yet. Let’s be clear what this means. Both countries want to join Nato, not because they fear any imminent Russian attack but because they believe that a strong alliance is the best guarantee of European security. They also understand that Russia and Nato cannot be equal partners. Russia has shown repeatedly that it does not respect international treaties: Putin has breached agreements on international borders, on the use of chemical and biological weapons, on the stationing of troops in Georgia and Moldova, on the development of intermediate nuclear weapons, and on the notification of military exercises. Indeed, in 1994, Russia was one of the signatories to the Budapest treaties, guaranteeing the territorial integrity of Ukraine itself : 20 years later it invaded Crimea and started the … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin has made his biggest blunder yet

Ukraine will feel fallout from Russia’s war for 100 years, says Olaf Scholz

May 11, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Ukraine will feel the aftermath of Russia's invasion "for 100 years" , the German Chancellor warned on Wednesday, as Western leaders prepared to drive a wedge between themselves and Moscow. Olaf Scholz said that the post-war rebuild would be plagued for a century by unexploded ordnance littering Ukrainian cities . "Those who live in Germany know that bombs from World War II are still frequently discovered," he said. "Ukraine should brace itself for battle with the consequences of this war for 100 years. "That is why we will also have to work together on the reconstruction." The Mr Scholz’s warning came as Boris Johnson signalled that relations with Vladimir Putin "could never be normalised" following his invasion of Ukraine. The Prime Minister was just one of the Western politicians seeking to leave the Kremlin isolated as it prepares for a long and protracted conflict . In Washington, Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, was under pressure to declare Russia … [Read more...] about Ukraine will feel fallout from Russia’s war for 100 years, says Olaf Scholz

When did the UK last win Eurovision?

May 14, 2022 by metro.co.uk

It’s that time again – the Eurovision Song Contest final 2022 is now upon us . This year’s competition will see TikTok star Sam Ryder take up the mantle as the UK’s entry with his huge ballad Space Man, and, for once, it’s looking like we might have a shot at a decent finish . However, he’ll face stiff competition with several other countries’ entries still having great odds. Ukraine ’s entry Stefania by Kalush Orchestra is currently the bookies’ favourite, and the previous year’s champions, Italy, are entering Mamhood & Blanco’s song Brividi, which is also doing well. However, perhaps the most significant obstacle Sam Ryder has to overcome is the UK’s dismal recent placing in the competition. With the glimmer of hope now alive, many fans are looking back to find out just what the UK’s record in Eurovision really looks like. When did the UK last win Eurovision? The last time the UK won the Eurovision Song Contest was in 1997 when Katrina and The … [Read more...] about When did the UK last win Eurovision?

WHEN Jessy Bunny was a little girl, she longed to play with dolls, put on makeup and express her feminine side but her parents didn’t allow her too. Growing up in a conservative rural village in Germany, Jessy was determined to be different and decided to move to Vienna, Austria after leaving school in 2019. Since then she has spent £24k turning herself into a real life BARBIE with cosmetic surgery including liposuction, cheek and chin fillers, and lip fillers. Jessy said: "Now, I want to turn my body into a total Barbie doll body complete with extreme lips, extreme tits and an extreme ass.” Aged 18, Jessy spent the £6,000 her parents had saved for her during her childhood to pay for breast enlargement surgery boosting her cup size from an A-cup to a E-cup. She said: “I was raised in a village in Germany and always wanted to wear makeup and be and act more girly.
