MILAN (Reuters) – The use of video replays by referees in Serie A has led to more controversies, according to Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri. However, he said this was partly because Italians enjoy controversies and suggested that, in principle, the video replay system (VAR) was a good idea. Juventus, second in the table, won 1-0 at Cagliari on Saturday but the Sardinians were angry over two decisions. They claimed that the move leading up to Federico Bernardeschi’s 74th minute goal should have been stopped after Leonardo Pavoletti was elbowed by Medhi Benatia, but the referee allowed the goal to stand without consulting the VAR. Shortly afterwards, Cagliari demanded a penalty for handball by Bernardeschi when the ball hit his outstretched arm. Police in Northern Ireland are probing a Twitter video of a Sinn Fein MP with a Kingsmill-branded loaf on his head posted on the anniversary of the Kingsmill massacre. Barry McElduff has apologised for Friday’s post, insisting it was not meant as a reference to the republican murders of 10 Protestant workmen in 1976. Police Service of Northern Ireland superintendent Emma Bond said: “Police have received a number of reports of a post on a social media platform, made by a local public representative. Enquiries are ongoing.” The well-known Kingsmill brand of bread shares a name with the south Armagh village that witnessed one of the most notorious incidents of the Troubles, when gunmen stopped a van carrying textile workers on their way home, identified the Protestant occupants, lined them up at the side of the road and shot them. Hughton issues time warning over video refs
Chris Hughton has welcomed Albion being used as guinea pigs for Video Assistant Referee technology. But he is concerned about too much scrutiny slowing the game down. Monday's third round FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace at the Amex will be the first competitive game in England to use the VAR system. Match referee Andre Marriner will have extra help from VAR Neil Swarbrick, watching on TV monitors at the Premier League's HQ near Heathrow, on decisions confined to the awarding of goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity.
