Erik ten Hag explains why he benched Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United’s Premier League opener
Erik ten Hag has explained his decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United ’s Premier League opener against Brighton. Ronaldo told United he wanted to leave the club earlier in the summer but offers for the Portugal legend have not been forthcoming . Due to personal issues, Ronaldo missed most of Manchester United’s pre-season schedule, only featuring in one game as he played 45 minutes in the club’s final friendly against Rayo Vallecano. Ten Hag says this is the reason he opted to bench Ronaldo for United’s first Premier League game of the season. Speaking ahead of the Brighton clash on Sunday, Ten Hag said: ‘Yeah, it’s been a short pre-season [for Ronaldo]. ‘He only started training last week and has only had 45 minutes on the pitch. He’s not at the fitness levels as the rest of the team. ‘We saw this weekend in the Premier League they have been really tough, high-intensity games, pressing from the front. So you need to be fit to do that. … [Read more...] about Erik ten Hag explains why he benched Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United’s Premier League opener
Manchester United consider shock move for former Stoke and West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic
Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for former West Ham and Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic this summer. The Red Devils are looking a bit short up front, with Cristiano Ronaldo still pushing for an exit and played just 45 minutes in pre-season friendlies, while Mason Greenwood is suspended indefinitely. Anthony Martial has been playing as a centre-forward throughout pre-season but the France international has suffered a hamstring injury just before the Premier League campaign gets underway. This has encouraged United to turn to less obvious options to help plug some gaps in attack and the Guardian report that Arnautovic has become a target. The 33-year-old is well known to Premier League fans after playing for Stoke from 2013-17 before moving to West Ham for two seasons, where he scored 22 goals in 65 games. Since then the Austrian has turned out for Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League before returning to Europe with Bologna in Italy. … [Read more...] about Manchester United consider shock move for former Stoke and West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic

Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea need more new signings before the transfer window closes but says a midfielder should not be a priority after the club’s push to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona .
