A North East student has won a major international award for his vision to create 'vegan-friendly buildings' made of natural materials including mushrooms. Ehab Sayed, who is is currently studying for a PhD in Architecture at Northumbria University’s Department of Architecture and Built Environment, has been named the winner of the COINS Grand Challenge for Global Leadership – the largest global competition for the construction industry. Thousands of people from across the world applied for the awards and Ehab was shortlisted for his work to bring biomimetic – or nature inspired – materials and construction systems into the construction industry. Sportwear giant Adidas have teamed up with British designer Stella McCartney to create a vegan-friendly version of their iconic Stan Smith trainer. The new footwear - which looks very similar to the originals we already know and love - features a portrait of McCartney on the tongue, a row of three stars along the side and striped pattern detailing on the heel. The new shoes, for both men and women, are available to order online at www.stellamccartney.com or buy in stores now. It's completely leather free, meaning vegans everywhere can sport the classic trainer guilt-free. Liverpool will soon have a brand new vegan-friendly independent based in the city centre when Peaberry Coffee House and Kitchen opens its doors this weekend. Based at Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock, its team are promising to serve up wholesome freshly made food with a varied food and drink menu including all-day breakfasts and fresh sandwiches. It will be opening this Saturday, September 8 and offering diners 50% off during its entire first week. It is a family-run business, owned by husband and wife Graeme and Clare Farrington, who are aiming to offer a diverse menu of locally sourced meat, fish, vegan and vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. Inside there is a 45-seated casual restaurant on one side and an open kitchen with sandwich counter and bar on the other. BROMSGROVE shop Nature’s Intention is hoping to lead the change to a more environmentally-friendly approach, writes Yixuan Wu. The vegan-friendly store, has been praised for its ‘zero waste’ approach, supported by Worcestershire County Council’s Business Energy Efficiency Programme.
