A new nasal spray is set to start human trials and could protect people from all Covid variants. The groundbreaking treatment could hit the shelves if clinical trials prove successful, with hopes of offering a more simple solution to beating coronavirus . There is also a high chance the treatment could be self-administered with a one-time nasal spray. This means it could be made available in pharmacies as a preventative measure to treat infections, according to researchers. Scientists said the spray contains "potent" proteins which target the virus's weak spots and prevent it from infecting the body . These virus hunting proteins could offer an alternative to vaccines which have proven difficult to develop and must be administered by health workers. Austrian Health Minister Johannes Rauch on Monday said that, with current low infection rates, legal mandates for masks to be worn in essential shops and on public transport could be suspended. However, he said, measures would likely be reimposed in the autumn with possible new variants, meaning that the pandemic was far from over. "It is now justifiable to pause the mask requirement," Rauch told a press conference. Mandatory mask-wearing will be suspended for three months until the end of August. However, "the mask will come back," the minister announced. Moderna’s Covid vaccine has been approved for use in children between the ages of six and 11 in the UK. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced on Thursday that the vaccine is both safe and effective in children. It will now be up to the experts on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to decide whether the US-made vaccine should be included in the jab rollout. Moderna’s vaccine is currently being used as a booster in adults. A half dose is also given to children. The announcement from the MHRA came on the same day that it approved the French-made vaccine Valneva for use in the UK. Britain was the first to approve this vaccine, taking its the tally for approved vaccines to six.
