The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen reveals band was ‘about to break up’ before Eurovision: ‘It saved us from destruction’
The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen has revealed the band came close to splitting up as lockdown and personal struggles drove the members apart. Lauri, Eero Heinonen, Aki Hakala and new guitarist Emilia ‘Empu’ Suhonen stormed back into the limelight this summer as they represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest with new single Jezebel. While they didn’t get the result they – or their masses of fans – were hoping for, Eurovision saw the Finnish four-piece find new admirers and regain old ones , some of whom may not have followed them since their massive 2003 hit In The Shadows . But Eurovision represented much more than that, as Lauri tells Metro.co.uk. ‘I think it was really something that saved us from destruction. It was just perfect timing for something like that,’ he says. ‘It really was important at this point, because we were really almost about to break up before all these good things started to happen. ‘Everything was so uncertain , and I … [Read more...] about The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen reveals band was ‘about to break up’ before Eurovision: ‘It saved us from destruction’
FIFA to move start date of Qatar World Cup after caving into key demand
FIFA will move the start date of the World Cup to one day earlier in order for Qatar to play first. The Athletic reports that though the tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday November 21, with the inaugural game being Senegal against the Netherlands, now it will be Qatar playing first. The host’s match against Ecuador is now thought to be pushed forward to Sunday November 20, with kick-off at 7pm. It is understood this was a request from the hosts. England face Iran on November 21 and that will be played that day as planned. The decision to move Qatar’s date still needs to be approved by the Bureau of the FIFA Council - a body made up of president Gianni Infantino and the leaders of each continental confederation. Why fragile Britain will struggle to bounce back
Investors dialling into corporate earnings calls are increasingly liable to hear the same worrying phrases again and again: "deterioration", "slowdown" and "pull back" were increasingly common between April and June, according to analysis of more than 700 transcripts by Barclays. More often than not, executives' concerns trace back to how much consumers can afford to spend as inflation soars to 40-year highs. Fears are particularly acute in Britain, where people buying everything from Spotify subscriptions to meals out and new shoes accounts for around two thirds of UK GDP. Official data on Friday showed the economy shrank 0.1pc in the three months to June compared with the previous quarter, when GDP grew by 0.8pc. It has led to renewed fears that a squeeze on consumer spending will push the UK into recession, with inflation set to climb even higher as energy bills soar over winter. The Bank of England says consumers are already cutting back . Many are trading down to … [Read more...] about Why fragile Britain will struggle to bounce back

Ruthless Lee Westwood’s warning shot
Lee Westwood issued a warning to rivals Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald Facing a weekend when once again he could cement his hold on the top of the world rankings, he issued a warning to rivals Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald with a 6&5 hammering of in-form Dane Anders Hansen. Although he started with a bogey, Westwood looked unstoppable as he reeled off seven birdies in nine holes from the fourth green. Victory today over the world No 50 Aaron Baddeley will guarantee him a place in the weekend knockout stages. “I didn’t think it was going to be an easy game against Anders,” said Westwood. “He always plays well at this time of year – he has won the PGA at Wentworth. I had to be on my guard but, after that run of birdies, I was always going to be tough to hold off.” After two weeks off, Westwood looked fresher than many players who travelled to Finca Cortesin near Malaga from the Players Championship in America early in the week. I didn’t think it was going to be an easy … [Read more...] about Ruthless Lee Westwood’s warning shot
Clive Woodward snubs RFU
Sir Clive Woodward will focus on his role with the Olympics Having twice changed the job description last week – first to rule Woodward out, then back in – the 2003 World Cup-winning coach has now made up their mind for them. He would have arrived at Twickenham with so much baggage there were plenty within the union who did not wish to touch him. But he has now lost patience, leaving the field clear for Stuart Lancaster, coach of the second-string England Saxons, to take a position that had started out as high profile but, without Woodward, looks like being brought firmly back to earth. Woodward’s last rugby job, the calamitous 2005 Lions tour to New Zealand, has been glossed over by his many recent cheerleaders and evidently made no impact on RFU bosses, led by chairman Martyn Thomas, who had him in mind. Instead, Woodward will carry on as director of sport with the British Olympic Association and deputy chef de mission of Team GB at next year’s London Olympics. In … [Read more...] about Clive Woodward snubs RFU
