COVID-19: Boris Johnson ‘very confident’ about all vaccines as South Africa halts Oxford rollout

· February 8, 2021 ·

Boris Johnson has said the British government is "very confident" about all of the vaccines being used, despite South Africa highlighting findings which suggest the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine may offer limited protection against mild disease caused by the COVID-19 variant discovered there. More than 12 million people have been vaccinated in the UK so far, and Mr Johnson said "all of the vaccines are effective in protecting against death and serious illness". Live COVID updates from the UK and around the world "We also think, in particular in the case of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, that there's good evidence it's stopping transmission as well - I think 67% reduction in transmission with the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine," the prime minister said during a visit to a coronavirus test manufacturing facility in Derby. He added he has "no doubt that vaccines generally are going to offer the way out". Air passenger from South Africa reveals she walked through Heathrow in 10 minutes with NO checks despite mutant strain

A PASSENGER travelling from South Africa has revealed that she walked through Heathrow airport in 10 minutes with NO checks. Sharon Feinstein, from Islington, North London, claims she went through the terminal with no questions, despite flying from Johannesburg - where the mutant Covid strain is rife. 🦠 Read our coronavirus live blog for the latest news & updates The traveller landed in London Heathrow yesterday after visiting her mum in South Africa - but was just ushered through passport control. Despite having documents to prove she had a negative test, there was no one to show it to, Ms Feinstein claims. She told the Daily Express: "I could have had Covid, they don't know where I am staying, they didn't ask. "As a country we're messing up. Why can a third-world country get it right and we can't?" Ms Feinstein, who is now self-isolating, added that she was "shocked" that it only took her 10 minutes to get through the airport control. She told Good Morning … [Read more...] about Air passenger from South Africa reveals she walked through Heathrow in 10 minutes with NO checks despite mutant strain

UK total of 170 cases of South Africa Covid variant ‘reassuring’

· February 9, 2021 ·

Public Health England has uncovered a total of 170 confirmed or probable cases of the South Africa variant of coronavirus that appears less susceptible to vaccines. Routine and surge testing revealed 151 cases in England, six in Scotland and 13 in Wales, according to Dr Susan Hopkins, PHE’s strategic response director, who described the numbers as “reassuring” because they suggest the variant has not taken hold in the UK. Scientists are keeping a watchful eye on the South Africa variant, named B1351 or 501YV2, because it could undermine efforts to contain the epidemic with vaccines should it spread more widely. Of the 170 cases, 18 are not linked to international travel, suggesting they were caught in the community. This week, South Africa paused its rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine after the results from a small trial in young people, yet to be published, suggested the jab prevented only 10% of mild or moderate disease caused by the variant. Faf de Klerk: South Africa is the dream but I’ll play anywhere to save Lions series

· January 15, 2021 ·

World Cup winner Faf de Klerk says he will support switching the Lions tour away from South Africa if that is the only way to save it. The Lions board meet today to try to find a way to keep the eight-match tour alive with no end in sight to the global pandemic. Having fans travel to South Africa before a vaccine programme is rolled out there seems unthinkable, staging games behind closed doors is financially unviable. Postponing for a year is problematic, with national teams already booked into tours tailored to fine-tuning their 2023 World Cup preparations. Which appears to leave two options: cancellation or moving the series to the UK and Ireland. Sale Sharks star De Klerk said: “Cancellation would be truly devastating. The Lions is a once in a lifetime opportunity. “Obviously everybody wants it to be played in South Africa, 100 per cent I do. It would be an amazing, iconic tour. “But if it can’t be there and it can happen somewhere else then that would still be a … [Read more...] about Faf de Klerk: South Africa is the dream but I’ll play anywhere to save Lions series
