An armed policeman at the Uvalde school massacre had an opportunity to shoot the gunman but missed his chance waiting for permission from a supervisor, according to a new report. Two teachers and 19 children died after police waited more than an hour to storm Robb Elementary School when Salvador Rolando Ramos opened fire on 24 May. Some of the 21 victims "could have been saved" if they had received faster medical attention, a review by Texas State University revealed on Wednesday. The report, considering the police response to the tragedy, pointed to a string of blunders made before Ramos, 18, walked through an open school door carrying an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle at 11:33 a.m. A Uvalde Police Department (UPD) officer reported he was at the scene where Ramos crashed his truck before leaving the vehicle with the weapon. Chicago shooting suspect confessed to police ahead of court appearance, state attorney says
The man charged with killing seven people in a shooting on an Independence Day parade in Chicago has confessed to police that he fired on the crowd. Robert E Crimo III faces seven counts of murder over the shooting in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois, and news of the confession - which was reported by the Lake County State's Attorney - came as he appeared in court. The state's attorney said that Crimo admitted dressing up as a woman to blend in with the crowd before climbing on the roof, looking through his sights and firing down the street with a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic rifle. It was also revealed that Crimo had considered a second shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, but - despite having 60 rounds remaining - he had not planned for this, so did not go ahead. Crimo, 21, had planned the Chicago attack for several weeks, police said, and is alleged to have climbed a fire escape ladder onto the roof of a business before firing at the crowd. … [Read more...] about Chicago shooting suspect confessed to police ahead of court appearance, state attorney says
279 Kidnapped Schoolgirls Freed In Nigeria | The Daily Wire
A Nigerian state governor announced on Tuesday that hundreds of girls who were kidnapped last week from a boarding school have been freed. The Associated Press reported: The girls, ages 10 and up, dressed in light blue hijabs and barefoot, packed into Zamfara state’s Government House conference room. They appeared calm, chatting to one another as they sat in long rows while journalists photographed them. They will receive a medical checkup before being returned to their parents. Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle said that 279 girls had been released after being taken from the Government Girls Junior Secondary School in Jangebe town on Friday. Last week, the government reported that 317 girls had been taken. The AP notes that it is not yet clear whether the higher number was a miscalculation or if there are still some girls who have not been returned. “Alhamdulillah! (God be praised!) It gladdens my heart to announce the release of the abducted students,” Matawalle said … [Read more...] about 279 Kidnapped Schoolgirls Freed In Nigeria | The Daily Wire
The World Is a Thriving Slaughterhouse
H ere, lying in a stained carton, are notes on a refugee camp in Tanzania, where surviving Tutsis and their Hutu enemies lived side by side in blue tarp tents. It is 1994. The notes record that there are people everywhere, milling and moving in short parades on the main path in the camp, hastily constructed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Women wear colorful cloths, khangas , and carry yellow plastic containers of water on their heads. Children and old men push up against one another, as if at a bargain sale. They hold portable radios to their ears. A man in a brown rain hat drags a reluctant goat by a rope. White smoke mixes with the smells of fresh earth and excrement. At an outdoor butcher shop, a cow’s bloodied horn lies beside the animal’s astonished head. I greet a group of young Hutus in French. “Did you participate in the killings?,” I ask. “We did nothing,” one says. “Did you see others do the killing?” He says, “We saw nothing.” I ask, “How many … [Read more...] about The World Is a Thriving Slaughterhouse
What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. My hand was on the knob when I realized I was naked. The next impact knocked the air conditioner to the floor. I grabbed a light-blue cotton robe and bolted. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. I raced along a row of sandbags, one hand holding the robe closed. The duck-and-cover bunkers were 100 feet away. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military

I wonder if the remaining sensible Republicans have accepted the irretrievable loss of the GOP they once knew. But first, here are three new stories from The Atlantic . Let’s use Chicago rules to beat Russia. Hybrid work is doomed. Uber Pool is a zombie. Harsher Truths In 1991, the last president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, was briefly deposed in a coup by hard-line members of the Soviet Communist Party. Gorbachev, upon his return to Moscow, tried to differentiate between the plotters and the Party itself. One of his closest advisers, Aleksandr Yakovlev, told him that this effort was pointless, akin to “serving tea to a corpse.” Republicans such as Senator Mitt Romney—an honorable man for whom I voted in 2012—and a handful of others in the GOP, … [Read more...] about Are the Last Rational Republicans in Denial?
When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
Liam Gallagher mocked for becoming face of Clarks shoes despite ‘trying to stay edgy’
Oasis singer Liam Gallagher has been roundly mocked for fronting an advert campaign for Clarks shoes. The famously volatile rocker, 49, started shooting an ad for the brand this week, which is best known for its school shoes. The shop also stocks various leather boots, loafers and casual shoes, often in a simple design. And his linkup has been described as "utterly strange". A source told The Sun : "Liam gets approached to do loads of different things, so it’s utterly strange that Clarks is the company he has opted to do a campaign with. "He’s still desperately trying to seem cool and edgy, but now he’s going to be helping to sell regular work shoes." "It doesn’t exactly fit with this idea of him being a rock star." Clarks shoes is known for its simple designs Liam was reportedly paid an "extortionate amount" to sign the deal with the British shoe manufacturer, which might showcase his reasoning. The singer was spotted wearing Clarks Originals Caravan Black … [Read more...] about Liam Gallagher mocked for becoming face of Clarks shoes despite ‘trying to stay edgy’
