An app that could create fake naked photos of women has been taken down by its creator. DeepNude used AI technology to digitally ‘undress’ women as users would upload a picture of a clothed woman and the app’s algorithm would transform it into a fake naked picture. The app, which first launched on March 28, was shut down less than a day after it gained widespread attention after an article appeared on Vice's tech offshoot Motherboard on June 26. As a response, the creators tweeted that they never thought the app would go viral and the "probability that people will misuse it is too high." "Honestly, the app is not that great, it only works with particular photos. We never thought it would become viral and we would not be able to control the traffic. “The world is not yet ready for DeepNude," they concluded. DeepNude was available to download for £40 and was a new example of ‘deepfake porn’ - where a woman’s head is digitally … [Read more...] about App that used AI to ‘undress’ women has been shut down
Chinese authorities are using a vast system of facial recognition technology to track its Uighur Muslim minority across the country, according to a story in the New York Times. Beijing has already attracted widespread criticism for its treatment of Uighurs in the northwest region of Xinjiang, where up to one million members of mostly Muslim Turkic-speaking minority groups are held in internment camps, according to estimates cited by a UN panel. But according to a Times article on Sunday, facial recognition technology -- integrated into China’s huge networks of surveillance cameras -- has been programmed to look exclusively for Uighurs based on their appearance and keep records of their movements across China. Police are now reportedly using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to target Uighurs outside Xinjiang, including in wealthy cities like Hangzhou and Wenzhou. The newspaper claims one central city scanned whether residents were Uighurs 500,000 times in one month alone. … [Read more...] about China using AI to identify Uighurs across China: NYT

American fast food chain McDonald's has bought an AI machine-learning company that will automatically change its drive-thru menu panels depending on factors such as weather, time, restaurant traffic and trends. The technology means that it could suggest McFlurry ice cream products on hot days, or show what is popular at that particular restaurant at the moment. It can also come up with instant suggestions based on what the customer has already ordered. McDonald's is acquiring Israeli startup Dynamic Yield for a reported £227,000 after a trial in some US restaurants last year. "Technology is a critical element of our Velocity Growth Plan, enhancing the experience for our customers by providing greater convenience on their terms," said Steve Easterbrook, president and chief executive of McDonald's.
