Fraudsters have been gaining people’s trust and getting them to pass on the serial numbers on the back of gift cards. Police are urging the public to be aware of fraudsters who have been tricking people into making payments using iTunes gift cards. Gardaí have issued a warning to the public over a scam tricking people into purchasing iTunes gift cards.The alert was raised after gardaí in Cork recently received a report of an attempt to defraud a business via email.The email was sent by a person claiming to be the manager of the company and requested that a staff member purchase €2,000 of iTunes gift cards and send on the voucher numbers. Thankfully the employee contacted their manager by phone to verify the request which turned out to be a scam.Gardaí say this is a new variation in the scam which previously operated via phone.That scam involved a victim receiving a phone call, voicemail or email from the scammer, claiming to be a representative of an organisation, in which they would claim the victim owes money. Staffordshire Police are warning householders to beware of fraudsters who are contacting residents by phone and trying to trick them into purchasing iTunes gift cards. People living in the Staffordshire Moorlands are being warned of a scam where fraudsters contact victims claiming they are owed money and they need to go to a local shop and purchase iTunes gift cards. The caller then says a courier will arrive to deliver a cheque later that day. A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "They tell you in order to pay or receive your award you need to buy iTunes vouchers - usually a large amount. This is not true - hang up your phone now. "In order to reassure you that they are genuine they will even tell you of shops local to you where you can buy them from - This is a fraudster's trick, they are expert in gaining your trust.
