I quit football for 14 years after homophobia stopped me playing
As I made a diving save across the goalpost, my team erupted in cheers. ‘Nice one, Superman,’ a fellow player congratulated. It felt euphoric to be back doing the thing that I loved as a child, and to be in such a supportive environment – 11 years after giving it up. Semi-automated offside technology will be used at the World Cup for the first time later this year - but football fans are not happy. Angry supporters are fed-up with constant meddling by the game's rule makers following the implementation of VAR and Arsene Wenger's proposed changes to the international match calendar. For many, the introduction of semi-automated offside technology represents the final straw. The new technology, which has already been tested at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and last year's FIFA Club World Cup , will see video match officials receive offside alerts, with decisions validated by humans before the match referee is informed.
