PASSENGERS have been stuck in long queues at Stansted airport and sleep on the floor ahead of further cancellations. Weary passengers were hit by more chaos as a mix of staff shortages and strikes continue to make air travel difficult. There were also big queues to get out of the station in Essex as travellers arrived at the airport by train. It comes as airlines have until Friday to take advantage of a government “amnesty” to the rules on airport slots, allowing airlines to change schedules without facing a potential penalty. Government ministers told airlines to review their flights after the May half term chaos, which was blamed on a shortage of airline and airport staff. And Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey today told Sky News: "Airports and airlines released a lot of people after the furlough scheme had come to an end. Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos
Security checks on aviation staff will be fast tracked in an attempt to cut delays at Britain's airports. The Department for Transport said it was speeding up the vetting process for new staff to help tackle the travel chaos that has plagued travellers for months. Holidaymakers faced more disruption on Saturday, with thousands of passengers at Heathrow hit by delays caused by a computer failure that left planes unable to refuel and "horrendous" scenes at the baggage reclaim area. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that by speeding up the vetting of new aviation security staff, the Government was "doing its bit to help deliver for passengers". Counter terrorism checks on staff, which previously took up to 20 days, are now being done in half the time, he said. New staff are also carrying out other training while their security checks are ongoing. Airlines are expected to announce a series of cancellations to summer flights next week aimed at minimising disruption in the … [Read more...] about Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos

More info Since the inception of North Korea in 1948, many have been fascinated by the lack of information about what life is like within the four walls of the notoriously secretive, hermit state. So far three generations of the Kim family have risen to power, all of which have been characterised by brutal executions, elaborate spending while civilians contend with famine and extreme isolation. Harry Potter parody show flies in to Christchurch after Covid-19 delays
A Harry Potter parody show that packs all seven books into 70 minutes – including a Quidditch game – has finally landed in Christchurch after being delayed by Covid-19. Potted Potter, starring Tama Jarman and Adam Brown, was originally scheduled to open at The Court Theatre in September, but was postponed after the Covid-19 alert levels were raised . Resident director Lizzie Tollemache said a season of the show at the Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North was interrupted by the first lockdown, then an Australian tour had to be cut short when the trans-Tasman travel bubble closed last year . She said the show, which was created by British performers Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner in 2006 and has since toured the world, had to be adapted in response to new pandemic rules. Hamilton wants ‘non-biased’ stewards and says ‘some drivers are friends with certain individuals’ after Masi controversy
LEWIS HAMILTON has called for "non-biased stewards" ahead of the 2022 Formula One season. The seven-time British world champion hopes future decisions made by officials are not influenced by their friendship with drivers. Hamilton said: “We need to make sure we get non-biased stewards. “Race drivers, some are very, very good friends with certain individuals, some travel with certain individuals and tend to take more of a keen liking to some of them. “I think people who have no bias and are super central when it comes to making decisions.” This comes after Hamilton lost out on a record-breaking EIGHTH world-title on the final lap in Abu Dhabi last season. Race director Michael Masi controversially cleared the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen under a safety car, allowing the Dutchman to have a clear run on Hamilton with fresh tyres to clinch his first championship. But in response to Hamilton, Red Bull boss Christian Horner denies any knowledge of drivers … [Read more...] about Hamilton wants ‘non-biased’ stewards and says ‘some drivers are friends with certain individuals’ after Masi controversy

Why Germany’s socialists are failing
Germany's socialists have been enviously eyeing their colleagues in neighboring France. The French left-wing alliance forged by Jean-Luc Melenchon emerged as the second-strongest force in the June parliamentary elections. In southern Europe, socialist parties have been in government for several years: Pedro Sanchez in Spain, Antonio Costa in Portugal. And then there's ex-guerrilla Gustavo Pedro , who was recently elected president in Colombia. The far-left message can still resonate with voters, it seems. But not in Germany. Germany's socialist Left Party is the smallest in the Bundestag and has seen a string of election failures in recent years, and they are currently represented in only nine of Germany's 16 state parliaments. Constant infighting has not helped. In April, the party was shaken by sexism accusations, after news magazine Der Spiegel published allegations of sexual misconduct in the Left Party's branch in the state of Hesse over a number of years. The … [Read more...] about Why Germany’s socialists are failing
