Iranian protesters staged rallies against the U.S. in the capital Tehran on Sunday, which marks 39th anniversary of the capture of the U.S. Embassy in 1979. “America, America, death to your deceptions” and “Death to America, death to Israel!” chanted protesters as they marched in the capital, Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency reported. Several political and military officials took part in the rallies, including Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard. Addressing the protesters, Jafari said Nov. 4 represents the conflict between Iran and the U.S. “Never threaten the Iranian people… do not make military threats against us, and do not frighten us by military threats,” Jafari was quoted as saying by Tehran Times. On Nov. 4, 1979, a group of Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 52 American hostages for 444 days. The … [Read more...] about Iranians stage anti-US rallies in Tehran

The artillery barrage was so intense that the US commandos dived into foxholes for protection, emerging covered in flying dirt and debris to fire back at a column of tanks advancing under the heavy shelling. It was the opening salvo in a nearly four-hour assault in February by around 500 pro-Syrian government forces – including Russian mercenaries – that threatened to inflame already simmering tensions between Washington and Moscow. In the end, 200 to 300 of the attacking fighters were killed. The others retreated under merciless air strikes from the US, returning later to retrieve their battlefield dead. None of the Americans at the small outpost in eastern Syria – about 40 by the end of the firefight – were harmed. The details of the 7 February firefight were gleaned from interviews and documents newly obtained by The New York Times. They provide the Pentagon’s first public on-the-ground accounting of one of the single bloodiest battles the … [Read more...] about The truth about the brutal four-hour battle between Russian mercenaries and US commandos in Syria
Why did the US designate the MEK a terrorist organisation in 1997? The MEK's supporters say it was banned as a move by the Clinton administration to appease the Iranian government. The US state department, which decides which groups to include on the list of designated terrorist organisations, points to a long and bloody history. The MEK ran a bombing campaign inside Iran against the Shah's regime the 1970s. The targets were sometimes American, including the US information office, Pepsi Cola, PanAm and General Motors. The group routinely denounced Zionism and "racist Israel", and called for "death to America". A state department report in 1992 identified the MEK as responsible for the killing of six Americans in Iran during the 1970s. They included three military officers and three men working for Rockwell International, a conglomerate specialising in aerospace including weapons, who were murdered in retaliation for the arrest of MEK members over the killings of the US military … [Read more...] about Q&A: what is the MEK and why did the US call it a terrorist organisation?
The riots near the Gaza Strip border had nothing to do with the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem, as they were planned as part of the Great March of Return launched on March 30 over the 70th anniversary of what the Palestinians call Nabka ("catastrophe") — the foundation of the Israeli state, Jerusalem-based political analyst and publicist Avigdor Eskin argues, outlining the destructive role of the Hamas militant movement during the unrest. On May 14 — the day of the opening ceremony — a number of Western mainstream media sources, including The Guardian, CNBC, Business Insider and The Wall Street Journal, called the border unrest Jerusalem embassy protests. The publicist has called attention to the fact that Hamas's statement doesn't even mention the May 14 relocation of the US Embassy to Jerusalem. © REUTERS / Amir CohenIsraeli Defense … [Read more...] about US Embassy Transfer Sends Strong Signal to America’s Arab Allies – Analyst
Israeli forces have killed 16 Palestinians and wounded at least 200 in Gaza, health officials said, as troops fired shots at residents rallying against the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem later on Monday. Tens of thousands turned out at locations across the coastal enclave despite warnings from the Israeli military that Palestinians risked their lives by taking part. Donald Trump’s December declaration on the embassy ignited six weeks of protests as Gaza residents gathered near the Israel border, with groups throwing stones, burning tyres and vandalising perimeter defences. To international condemnation, Israeli snipers have killed dozens and wounded more than 1,700 when firing on demonstrators in past rallies, according to Gaza’s ministry of health. “To the rioters, you are taking part in violent riots that jeopardise your lives,” the army said in leaflets dropped by jets on Monday. “Save yourselves and prioritise building your future.” … [Read more...] about Palestinians killed in protests against US embassy’s move to Jerusalem
