World’s largest whisky bottle sells for more than £1,000,000 to mystery buyer
The world’s largest bottle of whisky has sold for more than a £1 million. The 32-year-old, 311 litre bottle of Macallan single malt, was bought at an auction earlier today. Called The Intrepid, the vessel stands at an impressive 5ft 11 inches tall and holds enough liquid to fill 444 standard bottles. An anonymous foreign buyer purchased the whisky at Edinburgh-based auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull for £1.1 million. Parties from all over the globe were interested in the bottle but the final payment is worth the equivalent of almost £92 per dram. Daniel Monk, of Fah Mai and Rosewin Holdings, came up with the concept and claimed it had ‘always been about more than money’. ‘This is a passion project to celebrate the life of my late father, Captain Stanley Monk, who was himself an explorer and achieved many amazing things during his life,’ he said. ‘Today would have been his birthday so it was a perfect date to put The Intrepid up for auction.’ The bottle’s name is … [Read more...] about World’s largest whisky bottle sells for more than £1,000,000 to mystery buyer
Man undergoes double hand transplant in ‘world first’ for scleroderma patient
A man whose hands were left unusable by scleroderma has been given a new lease of life after what is believed to be the world’s first double hand transplant for the condition. Steven Gallagher, 48, was diagnosed with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that causes scarring of the skin and internal organs, after he developed an unusual rash about 13 years ago. The condition affected areas including his nose, mouth and hands and, about seven years ago, his fingers started curling in until they were in a fist position and he was suffering ‘horrendous’ pain. When experts suggested the idea of a double hand transplant the father-of-three initially dismissed the idea but then decided to go ahead despite the risks. He explained: ‘My hands started to close, it got to the point where it was basically two fists, my hands were unusable, I couldn’t do a thing apart from lift things with two hands. ‘I could not grab anything, it was a struggle to get dressed and things like … [Read more...] about Man undergoes double hand transplant in ‘world first’ for scleroderma patient

Monday morning news briefing: Emmanuel Macron’s election victory
After a polarising contest, Emmanuel Macron has become the first French president in 20 years to be elected for a second straight term. Close to tears, he insisted that he owed his re-election to reluctant voters who backed him to keep Marine Le Pen out of power . Standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, Mr Macron said: "Many of our compatriots voted for me not out of support for my ideas but to block those of the extreme Right." He told those who abstained or voted for Ms Le Pen that he understood their anger, adding: "I know how much I owe to you." Yet Ms Le Pen celebrated the result as taking her closer to power than ever . France correspondent Henry Samuel examines what is in Mr Macron's in-tray for his five-year term and Europe editor James Crisp explains why it will not mean a swift end to Brexit tensions with France. Putin will 'manipulate' UN chief's visit to Moscow Boris Johnson has warned the UN Secretary General that Vladimir Putin will try to … [Read more...] about Monday morning news briefing: Emmanuel Macron’s election victory
Gary Neville tells Liverpool to sign free agent who was ‘out of this world’ against Manchester United
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has encouraged Liverpool to make a move for potential free agent Christian Eriksen and believes he could play for any of the Premier League’s top six. The Dane, who suffered a heart attack in last summer’s Euro 2020 tournament, returned to football in January with Brentford and has performed superbly with the Bees, scoring once – against Chelsea – and laying on four assists in just 10 starts. Incredibly, only Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold have created chances with more regularity than Eriksen since he returned to the Premier League. The 30-year-old’s deal with Brentford expires at the end of next month and he is believed to have garnered interest from a number of clubs participating in Europe. Neville feels the deal would be a no-brainer and was in awe of Eriksen’s performance against United at Old Trafford at the start of the month – even though Brentford lost – and has suggested he could be an ideal signing to act as … [Read more...] about Gary Neville tells Liverpool to sign free agent who was ‘out of this world’ against Manchester United
Thursday morning UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak to extend energy bills relief for every household
Every household in the country will get extra money taken off their energy bills this autumn under a new cost of living support package to be unveiled by Rishi Sunak today. The Chancellor is set to announce an increase to the £200 saving unveiled earlier in the year and scrap plans to make people pay back the amount over the coming years. To fund the move, he will announce an oil and gas windfall tax that will see the amount companies pay linked to how much they invest. The multi-billion pound package is also expected to include new "targeted" support for the poorest households, possibly through Universal Credit or extra help for pensioners. Read how Boris Johnson and Mr Sunak hammered out the agreement as they faced growing pressure from voters to act.
