A group of students from West Papua in Indonesia are fearful about their futures in New Zealand after their scholarships were cut off. A group of about 40 students have been studying at different tertiary institutions in New Zealand, but in December received a letter from the Provincial Government of Papua saying their living allowances, travel and study fees were stopping and they had to return home because their studies had not met expectations. West Papua student Laurens Ikinia is part of a group advocating for the students. He said some students had gone home, but about 25 remained at Auckland, Waikato and Canterbury universities, as well as Palmerston North polytech UCOL and tertiary institution IPU New Zealand. “The reason the Government used was because we were not making any progress on our studies. We have actually requested from the provincial government about how did they come up with that? Stablecoins: What are Terra and Tether, and how did they help cause new crypto meltdown?
So-called stablecoins have led the cryptocurrency market to melt down in a moment of significant instability. The cryptocurrencies are intended to be a particularly reliable way of investing in digital money, and are marketed as being a way around the significant volatility in other, better known names such as bitcoin. For some, that volatility is a fun or valuable thing about cryptocurrencies, as people look to make money by trading them. But it is also means that they are a dangerous store of value, and are impractical to use in actual transactions. Stablecoins are meant to solve that by giving a constant exchange rate with the dollar, making them easy to value and theoretically more akin to actual cash. But in recent days, stablecoins have proven to be anything but – with not only their own prices collapsing but that collapse helping bring about chaos right across the cryptocurrency markets. ‘EastEnders star Katie Jarvis’ racist abuse ruined my life’ as mum demands apology
A mum left reeling by a racial tirade from EastEnders star Katie Jarvis says the episode has left her utterly traumatised. She was speaking for the first time since former Albert Square star Jarvis appeared in court over her race rant. Michelle had been enjoying a family day at the seaside when Jarvis blew her top in a dispute over a spare chair outside a fish and chip restaurant. The actress – who played Hayley Slater – called her a “black c***”, declared “black lives don’t matter” and boasted: “I’m a celebrity.” Michelle, 49, told the Sunday Mirror: “How can racism like this still be going on in the 2020s? Russia’s display of military might sent the West a strong message – just not the one Putin intended
Vladimir Putin likes to use Moscow’s Victory Day parade , the annual event to mark the triumph over Nazi Germany, as a means of messaging the West. There had been speculation the Russian leader might use his speech on Monday to call for a mobilisation of Russian society and the economy, better to fight his increasingly expensive assault on Ukraine. In the event, he did not declare “war” but a strong message about Russia’s military might was sent anyway – just not the one Putin would have wished. Instead the parade - hugely reduced in size and lacking a flypast apparently for reasons of bad weather - was the usual display of equipment in service today and a smattering of “new” kit designed to make us quake at Russia’s armed forces. Look closer though, and all is not as Moscow would have us believe. The T-14 Armata tank We were treated to a view of the T-14 Armata tank. Yet another view, as it turns out, because this “new” piece of equipment was first introduced in … [Read more...] about Russia’s display of military might sent the West a strong message – just not the one Putin intended
The Full Moon in Scorpio brings up insecurities – here’s what each star sign needs to know
The next Full Moon is on May 16, 2022, and this time it’s in Scorpio… meaning an intense period lies ahead. Full Moons present more opportunity for reflection than action, they bring an insightful, illuminating, contemplative energy to our world and make us pause to think about things we haven’t yet fully clarified or expressed. They bring stuff to the surface, basically. This Full Moon occurs in the Sun sign of Taurus and therefore sits with the opposing Moon sign of Scorpio . Scorpio’s passion meets Taurus’s practicality, although both signs are fixated on the notion of security, so it’s likely you’re obsessing (obsession is a Scorpio thing) over something which makes you feel insecure, unstable, doubtful, or shaky. The best way to think about this is to get practical (like a Taurus) and figure out a pragmatic, tangible means of addressing this fear IRL. Don’t go down a worry spiral. Talk it out, make notes, research options, create a plan of attack. Scorpio … [Read more...] about The Full Moon in Scorpio brings up insecurities – here’s what each star sign needs to know
Russian army ‘loses entire battalion’ trying to cross river in Ukraine
Ukrainian troops claim they have destroyed an entire battalion of Russian tanks trying to cross a bridge. Vladimir Putin recently moved his fight from Kyiv to the east of Ukraine – where there are some Russian separatist supporters. Having more backing in an already unstable region may have set Moscow’s troops up to perform better there. But Ukrainian authorities say the Russians are being defeated in the east too. Footage appears to show several burnt out Kremlin military vehicles on either side of the Siverskyi Donets River in the Donbas Region. Parts of a bridge can be seen in the river but the rest of it has been destroyed and is submerged in the water. The governor of the region said Ukraian Army’s 17th tank brigade had fought the Russian military on that bridge twice. Ukraine has also claimed Russian troops are withdrawing from Kharkiv , its second largest city, after losing the battle there. It comes as Russia has issued fresh nuclear threats, … [Read more...] about Russian army ‘loses entire battalion’ trying to cross river in Ukraine
