Boris Johnson pledges to slash 91,000 Whitehall jobs after civil servants demand right to work from abroad

May 13, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Boris Johnson unveiled plans to cut 91,000 civil service jobs on Thursday night as Whitehall opened a new front in their battle with ministers over working from home by seeking the right to work from abroad. The Prime Minister said the savings made from cutting “swollen” Whitehall departments would be ploughed back into helping people with the cost of living crisis, hinting it may be used to fund future tax cuts. At a Cabinet away day in Stoke-on-Trent on Thursday he gave each member of his top team one month to come up with plans for slimming down their own department as part of a drive to cut the overall number of officials by a fifth. “We have got to cut the cost of government to reduce the cost of living. Every pound the government pre-empts from the taxpayer is money they can spend on their own priorities, on their own lives”, he told the Daily Mail. The new policy, which No 10 says will shave £3.5 billion a year off the cost of running Whitehall, will take the civil … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson pledges to slash 91,000 Whitehall jobs after civil servants demand right to work from abroad

‘China’s worst nightmare’: Why Kim Jong Un’s health is a new headache for Xi Jinping

April 22, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

Rumors and varied reports on the supposed deteriorating health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent observers into a frenzy Tuesday as analysts and watchers of Pyongyang tried to ascertain the whereabouts and condition of the 36-year-old dictator. Intelligence agencies, journalists, and researchers are all trying to work out the state of play. The unexpected news—and subsequent speculation—from across the border with North Korea will have been an unwelcome surprise in Beijing, where officials are already grappling with the COVID-19 coronavirus fallout and economic collapse. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Tuesday that the government was aware of the reports but did not know their source, declining to comment further on the matter and providing no clarity on a situation that could destabilize Asia. North Korea has long been a volatile but useful foreign policy tool for the Chinese. The secretive state provides a handy buffer zone to keep democratic South … [Read more...] about ‘China’s worst nightmare’: Why Kim Jong Un’s health is a new headache for Xi Jinping

Foreign aid: UK cuts funding to UN in change of strategy

May 16, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By James Landale Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The government is to give billions of pounds less in foreign aid to international organisations such as the United Nations. Instead, the Foreign Office will spend the aid money on individual projects and countries that are UK priorities. The change is part of a new strategy designed to ensure aid spending does more to promote foreign policy. Aid charities criticised the strategy for focusing more on boosting UK trade than ending extreme poverty. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: "In an increasingly geopolitical world, we must use development as a key part of our foreign policy." She said the new strategy will ensure the UK's international development work has benefits across the globe and in the UK, improving economic security worldwide and increasing jobs and growth at home. World hunger at ‘new high’, UN warns, with enough grain to feed millions stuck in Ukraine

May 19, 2022 by news.sky.com

The secretary-general of the United Nations has warned that hunger levels around the world "are at a new high". Antonio Guterres was speaking at a meeting of world leaders called to discuss the escalating food security crisis. He said the number of people facing severe food insecurity had doubled in just two years from 135 million before the coronavirus pandemic to 276 million today. The number of people living in famine conditions has increased by more than 500% since 2016 and now sits at more than 500,000. "The complex security, economic and financial implications require goodwill on all sides for a package deal to be reached," Mr Guterres said. How Wimbledon’s Russian ban plunged tennis into civil war

April 20, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Tennis has always been a uniquely atomised and dysfunctional sport but this was the day it descended into outright civil war. Wimbledon's decision to ban Russian and Belarussian players sparked fury from the men’s and women’s tours, who labelled the move discriminatory and unfair, and leaves open the possibility of drawn-out and damaging legal battles. The first signals that this was going to be a tumultuous 24 hours for tennis actually came in the small hours of Wednesday morning, when news of the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s imminent announcement leaked out via a number of media organisations, including the New York Times. Telegraph Sport had previously predicted a swingeing ban for Russians and Belarusians at the start of this month. A flustered AELTC was forced into bringing forward their announcement, with media duly being briefed early in the afternoon that executives had been influenced by the horrific scenes in Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities. But if they … [Read more...] about How Wimbledon’s Russian ban plunged tennis into civil war

Combattants d’Azovstal : peine de mort évoquée en Russie, Kyiv espère un échange

May 18, 2022 by fr.euronews.com

… [Read more...] about Combattants d’Azovstal : peine de mort évoquée en Russie, Kyiv espère un échange

The case for the airport’s expansion: Can climate change activists and the airport company find common ground?

May 14, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

STUFF James Shaw, Minister for Climate Change and Green Party leader, announces carbon budgets. The runway extension is on pause, the bid to expand to the east is headed for the Environment Court, and on Thursday, the Wellington City Council spent two hours debating whether to publicly support it. On Monday, a group of climate and community activists are heading into five days of mediation with Wellington International Airport to seek middle ground on the issue of the airport’s growth. In last week’s meeting the council voted against officially opposing the expansion . The airport’s new chief executive, Matt Clarke, who started in the role only two weeks ago after 12 years as chief commercial officer, called it “a good result from an unnecessary process”. The vote wouldn’t have changed anything tangible – the airport doesn’t need the council’s permission to grow, despite the council owning a 34% share. It doesn’t even need public support. The airport is primarily a … [Read more...] about The case for the airport’s expansion: Can climate change activists and the airport company find common ground?
