Myanmar coup: Ambassador to UN fired after making three-fingered salute in support of protests

· February 27, 2021 ·

Myanmar's ambassador to the UN has been fired a day after making a three-fingered salute in support of anti-coup protests - as he called on nations to use "any means necessary" to reverse the military takeover. Kyaw Moe Tun was removed as police arrested hundreds of demonstrators who showed opposition to the coup on 1 February. Myanmar's crisis took a dramatic turn on Friday when the ambassador made a three-fingered salute adopted by the protesters before the UN General Assembly. Mr Tun had called on the world to pressure the military to cede power and said he was speaking on behalf of the ousted civilian government of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He used an emotional speech to urge all countries to issue public statements strongly condemning the coup. Mum who lost job after cancer diagnosis says £20 Universal Credit is “vital” support

· February 22, 2021 ·

A mum who was diagnosed with stage four cancer during the pandemic has said the £20 a week Universal Credit uplift has been vital in her access to care over the past year. Judith Neptial, 49, said she will struggle to attend medical appointments from April when the Chancellor withdraws emergency support. Neptial is one of 100,000 cancer sufferers who have struggled to afford food, rent and bills in the past year due to their inability to work. The total number of people struggling, according to charity Macmillan Cancer, is half a million in the UK. The figures come as the Chancellor prepares to withdraw the £20 a week Universal Credit uplift introduced as a lifeline for millions of people last April. Judith is currently living with Stage 4 bile duct cancer. The mum-of-one from London was forced to give up her career as a psychotherapist due to her illness. She said the government's £80 a month Universal Credit uplift has helped her attend crucial treatment during the … [Read more...] about Mum who lost job after cancer diagnosis says £20 Universal Credit is “vital” support

COVID-19: Vaccine rollout by age not profession makes sense, says ex-chief scientific adviser Mark Walport

· February 27, 2021 ·

A former chief scientific adviser says rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine by age rather than prioritising professions "makes sense". Professor Sir Mark Walport, who advised the government from 2013-2017, defended the decision to not prioritise frontline professions after teacher and police unions voiced their disappointment. On Friday, the government announced who would be the next priority for getting the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the second phase of the rollout. If everyone in the top nine priority groups has had their first dose by 15 April, the next group will be those aged 40-49, then 30-39 year olds and finally 18-29 year olds by 31 July. "The rollout is going in such an efficient way by doing it through the ages," Professor Sir Mark told the BBC. Advertisement "Of course, there will be many teachers, many police, who are in the 40-50 age group and indeed who will have been immunised already. So, it does make sense. "It's still … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Vaccine rollout by age not profession makes sense, says ex-chief scientific adviser Mark Walport
