The former dean of Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, who oversaw disgraced Olympic gymnastics coach Larry Nassar, was arrested Monday and will face charges of “inappropriately touching a student and storing nude photos of female students on his work computer,” CBS News reports . William Strampel is perhaps best known as Nassar’s boss, and the man charged with overseeing Nassar’s work in the school’s sports medicine clinic while Nassar molested dozens of female gymnasts. Strampel was already under scrutiny for allegedly never following up on complaints about Nassar’s behavior; he began a leave of absence from his position in December, as the school launched an internal investigation. Now Strampel is facing charges, though Ingham County Prosecutors declined to give further details on Strampel’s alleged crimes other than to say they are sexual in nature and involve female students. THE US embassy in Kiev is ready to evacuate over fears Russia may invade Ukraine by Wednesday as tensions reach boiling point, reports say. American diplomats will reportedly be urged to leave Kiev as soon as possible due to the looming threat, while Joe Biden prepares for a crisis call with Vladimir Putin at 11am on Saturday. The US State Department is expected to announce on Saturday that American staff at the Kiev embassy will be required to leave the country. Emergency diplomatic efforts are underway with Biden expected to discuss the crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on Saturday. The US previously told families of embassy workers to leave amid the feared Russian invasion and German newspaper Der Spiegel has reported that the invasion may happen as soon as Wednesday. Former U.S. Ambassador: ‘Ukrainians are fighting for our freedom as well’

May 26, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

As the deadliest European war in decades enters its third month, Newsweek spoke with former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch about the deeper implications of the conflict — for Ukraine itself, but also for the wider world. Yovanovitch, whose recently released memoir, Lessons From the Edge, details both her 33-year diplomatic career and her firing by former President Donald Trump in 2019 following an extensive smear campaign against her, sees Ukraine as a key battleground in the global contest between democracy and autocracy. In her interview, Yovanovitch stressed the importance of understanding the effect that regime type has on a given country's policies, both foreign and domestic. From her perspective, the current hot war in Ukraine is not a battle over materialistic geopolitical interests or expanding alliance structures, but an attempt by an authoritarian Russian leadership to remake the world in its own image. It is a fight that, if Russia is permitted to win, … [Read more...] about Former U.S. Ambassador: ‘Ukrainians are fighting for our freedom as well’

Live Updates As Russia's invasion continues for a 57th day, President Joe Biden announced an additional $800 million in security assistance to Ukraine and established a new program to streamline Ukrainians seeking to enter the U.S. Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin has failed to achieve his "grand ambitions" as Ukraine continues to fight. Putin reportedly canceled an assault on the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, where hundreds of civilians were sheltering, over concerns of Russian casualties. Ukraine is calling for "urgent" humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians who remain in the besieged Mariupol, describing the situation as "desperate." While 79 people were able to evacuate Mariupol to Zaporizhia Thursday, Ukraine Deputy Prime Minister said "everything is going very slowly." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked foreign allies for more weapons as Ukrainian forces continue to defend their cities against Russian bombardment. … [Read more...] about Ukraine War: Pentagon details Phoenix Ghost drones sent to Ukraine
