Boris Johnson will not intervene in cost of living crisis as that is ‘for future prime minister’
Downing Street has rejected calls for Boris Johnson to summon an emergency COBRA meeting to deal with the cost of living crisis. Gordon Brown, the former Labour prime minister, has called for Mr Johnson to meet with his two potential successors and thrash out a financial package of measures before energy bills soar in October. He said people will go cold and hungry this winter if urgent action isn't taken now, telling Sky News he was seeing poverty in his hometown in Fife " that I did not expect to see ever again in my lifetime ". Politics Hub: Brown slams 'vacuum' at heart of government A leading business group, the CBI, also urged Mr Johnson to "act now" as they set out four actions the government could take to ease the impact of the crisis. Incredible moment two neutron stars collide captured in world-first video
Astronomers have captured a powerful neutron star merger in world-first timelapse footage released by the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The research team use an extremely sensitive array of radio telescopes to detect one of the most energetic short-duraction gamma ray bursts ever observed. The array in Atacama, Chile recorded the explosive light down to tiny, milimetre-scale wavelengths for the first time. Only half a dozen gamma ray bursts like this have been observed before, and those were recorded at longer wavelengths. The result is a video showing the light from a neutron star colliding with another star approximately 20 billion light years away. What is a gamma ray burst? The most energetic explosions in the universe, gamma ray bursts can release more energy in a few seconds than the Sun emits over its entire existence. They can take place when massive bodies like stars smash into each other, or when black holes are formed. Short duration gamma … [Read more...] about Incredible moment two neutron stars collide captured in world-first video
It’s about time women had a voice at weddings
My little sister has just got engaged, which is very, very exciting, although I was standing in a Soho sex shop and cried when I heard the news. Tears of joy, someone queried later? Not exactly. I was in the Soho sex shop buying rude confetti for my best friend’s hen party that day, and I was also feeling bruised after a furious row the previous morning with the hot-blooded Greek man I’ve been dating . Weeping while standing near the bondage section in a Soho basement is not a good look, but I felt – momentarily – very left behind. A bit like Lizzie Bennet, who has to leave the room in one section of Pride and Prejudice because little sister Lydia keeps wafting her engagement ring under her nose. Fortunately, I’ve bucked up since and my mother and I have taken to discussing the forthcoming wedding like a pair of elderly aunts. Where will they do it? When will they do it? What will Rosie wear? What will she do for the hen party (I know an excellent shop in Soho for supplies)? And … [Read more...] about It’s about time women had a voice at weddings

Private struggle: Why some with breast cancer keep it to themselves
After a breast cancer diagnosis, many find comfort in connecting with family, friends and support groups — but some choose to live with their illness more quietly, keeping it private from almost everyone. They may not want to worry loved ones with talk of treatments and prognoses or they may wish to avoid being labeled as “sick” at work, home or even among strangers. While cancer experts say there’s a myriad of deeply personal reasons some breast cancer patients keep their diagnosis on the down low, it’s important to have at least a few confidantes by your side. They say without the support of close friends or family members, the journey with breast cancer can be more isolating. Keeping it close One 44-year-old freelance writer from New York City said when she learned she had breast cancer five years ago, she was lucky to have a close friend with her at the time of diagnosis. The circle of people she has told since then hasn’t widened much, though. In addition to a few … [Read more...] about Private struggle: Why some with breast cancer keep it to themselves
