Come in, spinner. Otago has a healthy stock of slow bowlers in its ranks who will be hoping the wickets turn square at the national under-19 tournament which gets under way in Lincoln tomorrow. It can also call on a core group of experienced players who have enjoyed success at this level. Hunter Kindley, Max Chu, Llew Johnson and Ben Lockrose helped their province claim the title in 2016-17 and are back for another shot. Kindley will captain the team and he will have a point to prove after a terrible run with injury. He was the tournament's leading scorer in 2016-17 with 306 runs at an average of 51. The right-arm off-spinner picked up seven wickets as well. But he fractured his ankle during the final and was not able to take his place in the New Zealand under-18 team. Then earlier this year a shoulder injury ruled him out of the under-19 World Cup team. ''He had a very successful tournament a couple of years ago ... and he will be an important part of our spin bowling line-up as … [Read more...] about Otago under-19 blessed with strong spin-bowling stocks

The Young Lionesses beat Holland 2-1 in the last eight to reach the semi-finals of the Under-20s World Cup for the first time. A meeting with Japan in Vannes now stands between them and a place in the final – with Patten revealing a dance routine has helped Mo Marley’s side make it this far. “The other day, we had time off in the evening and we thought ‘let’s put on a talent show’,” she told FIFA.com. “We all got split into groups of five and had a singing portion, a dancing portion, and a ‘whatever you want to amuse the judges’. “In the dancing one, my group of five came up with that dance routine and went on to … [Read more...] about England head into Under-20s World Cup semi-final ready to show their moves

There was heartache for Liverpool's Adam Lallana as England announced their 23-man squad for the World Cup. The Reds midfielder has paid the price for his lack of game time this season after being overlooked by manager Gareth Southgate for the finals in Russia. Lallana, who has only started three matches due to thigh and hamstring problems, has to settle for a place on the standby list. However, clubmates Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be on the plane to Russia . Liverpool captain Henderson is one of only five survivors from England's World Cup squad in 2014. The month of May has been kind so far to Dominic Solanke. He began it on the pitch as a late substitute in a Champions League semi-final in Rome. A first Liverpool goal against Brighton and Hove Albion followed last Sunday, in a match that he began ahead of more experienced players like Danny Ings and Adam Lallana – a measure of the faith Jürgen Klopp has showed in his 20-year-old recruit from Chelsea. And still to come is the excitement of a Champions League final, with the possibility of a winner’s medal to add to the one collected at the U20 World Cup last June, along with his Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player. The season has ended brightly for Lewis Cook too. Of that England team, it is the man who lifted the World Cup trophy as captain who made the most Premier League starting appearances (25) in 2017/18 – a notable improvement on his four in 2016/17. It says plenty about Cook’s progress in a Bournemouth shirt that a run of 18 … [Read more...] about England’s Under-20 World Cup winners one year on: Does the future still look as bright for country’s young lions?
