This former nurse has been praised for her selfless courage in helping pregnant women in the depths of drug addiction. Wendy Anderson, from Nottingham, is the UK's only dedicated substance misuse midwife and is responsible for up to 150 pregnant women a year. Louise Harrison, 52, also has a dual role as a team leader and works closely with Wendy. The pair even spent an entire week searching crack houses across Nottingham in a bid to track down a sex worker who was due to give birth last Chrsitmas. The women, as young as 13, are addicted to heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and alcohol, Nottinghamshire Live reported. A wave of dangerous new drugs - including one known as black mamba - pose a grave new threat to expectant mothers and their unborn children. Operating out of a small, one-bedroom office she assists numerous mothers-to-be who need her help. Unborn babies heart rates
Pregnant women have been warned they could be putting their unborn babies’ lives in danger by using home equipment to monitor their heartbeats. Midwives at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital are appealing to women to steer clear of hand-held Dopplers sold by private firms to check babies’ heartbeats. Wendy McKenzie, sister of the Antenatal Day Unit and the Antenatal Clinic at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said using a Doppler at home can stop women seeking urgent medical attention when their baby may be in distress. She said: “Midwives and doctors have regular updates on training to listen to foetal heart rates so this is not something anyone can do. “What you could be hearing is a maternal pulse so you could think your baby is fine when you should be contacting us. You could also be measuring a heart rate of 150 which you think is fine but is actually masking something untoward. “You can also cause yourself unnecessary anxiety which … [Read more...] about Pregnant women must never use this to listen to baby’s heartbeat

EMMERDALE star Dominic Brunt has revealed the horrifying moment he had to consider donating the organs of his baby son as he went for a life-saving heart operation. The actor - who plays Paddy Kirk in the ITV drama - and his wife Joanne were left terrified when their then eight-month old son Danny needed by-pass surgery with a risk he may not survive. Doctors asked the couple to consider organ donation should the worst happen, which thankfully it did not and he's now a healthy nine-year-old. But Dominic explained to the Mirror: “At the time it was horrific. You’re in the eye of the storm, it was horrible. You think you are going to lose your son. “We had only just got to know him – he was eight months old, and we thought that was it. “That was the worst bit – when they gave him the pre-meds and the gas and air and they took him out of the room and you just thought that was goodbye." The actor, whose character Paddy is expecting a daughter who won't … [Read more...] about Emmerdale star Dominic Brunt reveals ‘horrific moment’ he had to consider donating baby son’s organs as he underwent heart operation
