Energy efficiency means using less energy to provide the same service. For example, a compact fluorescent bulb is more efficient than a traditional incandescent bulb as it uses much less electrical energy to produce the same amount of light. Similarly, an efficient boiler takes less fuel to heat a home to a given temperature than a less efficient model. The phrase 'energy efficiency' is often used as a shorthand to describe any kind of energy-saving measure, though technically it should be distinguished from energy conservation – a broader term which can also include forgoing a service rather than changing the efficiency with which it is provided. Examples of energy conservation include turning down a thermostat in the winter or walking to the shops rather than driving there. Increasing energy efficiency often costs money up-front but in many cases this capital outlay will be paid back in the form of reduced energy costs within a short time period. This makes efficiency … [Read more...] about What’s energy efficiency and how much can it help cut emissions?

Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 5 will be equipped with a more energy-efficient standby mode, as part of a wider effort by the gaming industry to address climate change. The Japanese firm said its next gaming console will allow players to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than the current PlayStation 4. According to a 2014 report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the PS4 uses 8.5W in standby mode, but Sony estimates its new hardware could consume as little as 0.5W. However, it appears that users will have to manually switch the energy-saving option on, rather than it being active by default. "If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes," said Jim Ryan, PlayStation president and chief executive. The company joined 20 other names in gaming at a UN Climate Summit on Monday, where they formally committed to harness the power of their platforms to take action in response to climate change. … [Read more...] about PlayStation 5 to feature new ‘low-power mode’ and consume less energy than PS4
