Gordon Brown demands emergency budget before ‘financial timebomb’
By Malu Cursino Published 49 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown has called for an emergency budget before the UK hits a "financial timebomb" this autumn. Mr Brown said millions would be pushed "over the edge" if the government does not address the cost of living crisis. Conservative leadership rivals Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have clashed over how they will address high inflation. He wants them to agree an emergency budget with PM Boris Johnson this week, or for parliament to be recalled. Writing in the Observer , Mr Brown said: "The reality is grim and undeniable: a financial timebomb will explode for families in October as a second round of fuel price rises in six months sends shock waves through every household and pushes millions over the edge." A new report commissioned by Mr Brown, carried out by … [Read more...] about Gordon Brown demands emergency budget before ‘financial timebomb’
Calls for emergency increase to Universal Credit as report finds some families £1,600 worse off
The next prime minister is facing calls to immediately increase Universal Credit payments to stop vulnerable people spiralling further into poverty when fuel bills increase again this winter. The poorest in society are suffering three major blows to their income in the year to October 2022, according to a report commissioned by former prime minister Gordon Brown. As well as losing the £20-a-week uplift to Universal Credit, benefits are failing to keep up with inflation - and a jump in the energy price cap is expected this autumn. It means some families are up to £1,600-a-year worse off because of the cost of living crisis - even after government help is taken into account. Poverty expert Professor Donald Hirsch, who wrote the report, says the package of measures offered by the government falls far short of what low income households need - and urgent action is required. THE £60 MILLION BRAND THAT TOOK (CACAO) BALLS TO BUILD! Ella Mills opens up about family, fame and facing down her haters
When Ella Mills, 31, says that her life is ‘on fast-forward’ it’s hard to disagree. Just ten years ago, as a student, she started the blog Deliciously Ella, detailing her recovery from debilitating illness through meditation and plant-based recipes. Today, Deliciously Ella is a multifaceted lifestyle brand with projected revenues for 2022 of £20 million (putting the company’s value at around £60 million) and over two million Instagram followers. In 2012, plant-based eating was a niche concern. ‘But now 50 per cent of the UK population are into it,’ she says. Clearly there is a lot of money to be made from cacao nibs. Ella and her family (husband and Deliciously Ella’s CEO Matthew Mills, 38, and their daughters Skye, three, and May, nearly two) live just off London ’s Kensington Church Street, where houses sell for north of £5 million, but Ella insists their lifestyle is not lavish. She can’t drive and her husband Matthew’s car is a secondhand BMW. Their last holiday was four days … [Read more...] about THE £60 MILLION BRAND THAT TOOK (CACAO) BALLS TO BUILD! Margaret Thatcher understood the secret of winning elections: free market economic policy
This election was a gamble – as all elections are gambles. You can never take them for granted. But you can run a good campaign. Unfortunately this was a most appalling Conservative campaign – thoroughly inept. There were two principal problems: personality and policy. It was far too personal a campaign , and Theresa May couldn’t carry that off. Worse, there were too many things in the manifesto that hadn’t been thought through, with social care being the most obvious. Not that the social care proposals were in themselves stupid, but it is dangerous to do these things before elections if you don’t have to; better to introduce the legislation later, once elected. In this the two problems combined, because colleagues could have alerted her to the danger, had she consulted them. But she did not . She has always been a loner . She was a loner in the Home Office, and from day one as Prime Minister. By contrast Margaret Thatcher, with whom Mrs May has sometimes been … [Read more...] about Margaret Thatcher understood the secret of winning elections: free market economic policy

Generation rent ‘failed by the Government on housing’
Generations of aspiring homeowners are being failed by the Government and will struggle to get on the property ladder without major planning reforms, the boss of Redrow has claimed. In a warning shot to Tory leadership candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, Matthew Pratt said saving up a deposit without help from the “bank of mum and dad” was now almost impossible for a current generation of renters. He warned the problem will only get worse without reforms to ensure more planning permissions are granted, allowing home building to be ramped up . His comments come after both Ms Truss and Mr Sunak vowed to ditch national housing targets if they become Prime Minister. Mr Pratt told the Telegraph: “We're letting down future generations. You can see that from the average age of first time buyers, which has been going up year on year. "If you don't have access to the bank of mum and dad, I would fear for anyone trying to get on the housing market because they've got to pay rent … [Read more...] about Generation rent ‘failed by the Government on housing’

Michael Mann on the prequel/sequel novel “Heat 2,” and going deep on the life of cities
Oscar-nominated Hollywood director Michael Mann has been in Italy long enough to develop a morning routine – a cappuccino grande – and find a favorite café in Modena, where he is shooting his latest film, "Ferrari." This city is the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari and his company, and is famed for fast cars and good food. "Cities fascinate me – they have their own character," Mann said. Correspondent Seth Doane asked, "What do you get out of a city like this one, Modena?" "What I get is a real challenge to understand what life is like if you're living here," he replied. "To me the challenge is to get so deep into this specific regional culture, because the deeper I do that, the more universal it becomes." The detail-obsessed director has made a career of prompting audiences to feel for the characters in his films, whether it's the last remaining member of the Mohican tribe, or the plight of a tobacco industry whistleblower in "The Insider." There was the collective stress we felt … [Read more...] about Michael Mann on the prequel/sequel novel “Heat 2,” and going deep on the life of cities
