Zaporizhzhia: Worker wounded in new Russian shelling at nuclear plant, says Ukraine

August 7, 2022 by www.euronews.com

Ukraine's state nuclear power company said on Sunday that a worker was wounded when Russian forces again shelled the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Saturday evening. Radiation monitoring sensors were also damaged, Energoatom said. Rocket attacks struck the site of the plant's dry storage facility, where 174 containers with spent nuclear fuel are stored in the open air, the company said on the Telegram messaging app. The Zaporizhzhia plant was captured by Russian forces in the opening stage of the war but is still run by Ukrainian technicians. The plant was also shelled on Friday, and Russia again blamed Ukraine for the fresh incident. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) raised grave concerns on Saturday about shelling the previous day at Zaporizhzhia, the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, and warned of potential "nuclear disaster". "I’m extremely concerned by the shelling yesterday at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which … [Read more...] about Zaporizhzhia: Worker wounded in new Russian shelling at nuclear plant, says Ukraine

Posting the video on social media, Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko outlined his "eternal gratitude" to all of the country's "sky defenders." It comes after the Pentagon said that U.S.-supplied weapons are preventing Russia from gaining air superiority in its war against Ukraine. During a July 29 briefing, an unnamed senior military official told reporters that Ukraine's forces have successfully used U.S.-made … [Read more...] about Ukraine says Air Force “defending sky” as Russia struggles to gain control

August 7, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

The following is the full transcript of an interview with Taiwanese Rep. to the U.S. Bi-khim Hsiao that aired Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, on "Face the Nation." MARGARET BRENNAN: Representative Hsiao, thank you so much for coming here today to talk to us. It's an intense week. Speaker Pelosi is the highest ranking US official to visit Taiwan in about 25 years. Why is Beijing so furious? BI-KHIM HSIAO: Well, there's no reason for them to be so furious. We have had decades of welcoming congressional delegations to Taiwan. And this has been a norm in our culture. The Taiwanese people are warm and hospitable. We're visiting friends is part of our tradition. And actually one of the most quoted Confucian Analects in Taiwan is "isn't it a pleasure to welcome friends from afar" and so having this as part of the norm of our engagement with the United States, codified in a strong foundation of the Taiwan Relations Act, there's really no reason for them to be so upset. BRENNAN: Well, the US was … [Read more...] about Full transcript: Taiwanese Rep. to the U.S. Bi-khim Hsiao on “Face the Nation,” Aug. 7, 2022
