Six children and several PIJ fighters - including leaders Khaled Mansour and Tayseer Jabari - are among the 31 Palestinians reported to have died. Nearly 600 Palestinian rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since Friday, an Israeli official said. Israel says it launched the operations due to "immediate threat" from PIJ. The latest violence is the most serious flare-up between Israel and Gaza since an 11-day conflict in May 2021 left more than 200 Palestinians and a dozen Israelis dead. Ukraine's state nuclear power company said on Sunday that a worker was wounded when Russian forces again shelled the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Saturday evening. Radiation monitoring sensors were also damaged, Energoatom said. Rocket attacks struck the site of the plant's dry storage facility, where 174 containers with spent nuclear fuel are stored in the open air, the company said on the Telegram messaging app. The Zaporizhzhia plant was captured by Russian forces in the opening stage of the war but is still run by Ukrainian technicians. The plant was also shelled on Friday, and Russia again blamed Ukraine for the fresh incident. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) raised grave concerns on Saturday about shelling the previous day at Zaporizhzhia, the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, and warned of potential "nuclear disaster". Ukraine's Air Force is "reliably" defending the sky against Russia, officials said, as Moscow continues to struggle to gain air superiority. "The Air Force reliably defends the Ukrainian sky and gives a worthy rebuff to the Russian aggressor in it," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a tweet early Sunday. "Thank you for your professionalism and dedication to the defense of Ukraine!" On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also released a video to celebrate Air Force of Ukraine Day. Posting the video on social media, Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko outlined his "eternal gratitude" to all of the country's "sky defenders." Lieutenant-Colonel Angus Southwood, who has died aged 92, played a notable part in one of the most remarkable espionage coups of the Cold War. Based at Potsdam, East Germany, Southwood served with the British Commanders’-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany (Brixmis) from 1965 to 1967. The compact whereby the British and Soviet commanders-in-chief exchanged military liaison missions remained in force from 1946 until the reunification of Germany in 1990. There were similar arrangements for American and French forces. Brixmis was not originally intended to become involved in covert reconnaissance but it developed into an arm of British Intelligence, with a specialist map-making team, electronic, signals and photographic experts and light aircraft with dedicated RAF pilots. A group of Ukrainian medical students have been welcomed by one of the UK's top universities to continue their training after fleeing their war-torn country. The 20 students from the bombarded north-eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv will be given seven weeks of training at the University of Cambridge as part of the programme. As a result of the war, and the COVID pandemic, most of their education for the last two years has been completed virtually. Everton football club has cut ties with its Russian sponsors, including USM which is owned by oligarch Alisher Usmanov. The Merseyside club has also cut ties with Megafon, which is the second-largest mobile phone operator and the third-largest telecom operator in Russia and smartphone manufacturer Yota. Mr Usmanov, a Russian metals tycoon and former Arsenal co-owner, is among the oligarchs sanctioned by the EU and is also said to be on a list of people due to face sanctions by the US Treasury, the Washington Post reported. Despite the turmoil at home, for these Ukrainian circus performers, the show must go on. After months of uncertainty, they're back on stage, getting one last practice in before the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which opens this week in Scotland. The troupe is joining Czech performers for a new show called Boom by the Prague-based circus group, Cirk La Putyka. Its director, Rosta Novak, said it had been a tough time for Ukrainian artists. With no street or statue to remember Yugoslavia's late strongman Josip Broz Tito, a new tour in the Croatian capital Zagreb is hoping to trace the leader's complicated legacy in the city where he remains a delicate subject. Adored by some and hated by others, four decades after his death Tito remains a polarising figure across the former Yugoslav republics, including Croatia, where he helped usher in prosperity and authoritarianism alike. The tour's curator Danijela Matijevic said the idea for the project first came about in 2017 after authorities in Zagreb stripped Tito's name from a prominent square. The move was the latest in a string of measures over the years aimed at ridding the country of its Yugoslav past, removing plaques and monuments along with renaming streets and squares.
