Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?

July 5, 2022 by www.euronews.com

The British opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer has said there is no going back on Brexit, in a speech on Monday night. Instead, he offered a new slogan as part of a drive to ensure Britain thrives: "Make Brexit Work". "There are some who say 'we don’t need to make Brexit work — we need to reverse it'," the Labour leader told the Centre for European Reform (CER) . "I couldn’t disagree more." "Let me be very clear. Under Labour, Britain will not go back into the EU. We will not be joining the single market. We will not be joining a customs union." It represents a major policy shift for Starmer — who in the run-up to Brexit called for a deal to be put to a second referendum, and lauded the benefits of the free movement of workers, now consigned to the past. It also further distances the country's current direction from the fiery debates and deadlock in the aftermath of the 2016 referendum, with the two largest parties firmly wedded to the UK's departure from the … [Read more...] about Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?

EuroMillions jackpot could make you UK’s biggest ever lottery winner with incredible £186MILLION up for grabs TONIGHT

July 5, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

THE UK's biggest ever lottery winner could be crowned TONIGHT with a whopping £186 million jackpot is up for grabs. Should a UK National Lottery ticket-holder walk away with the cash in the EuroMillions draw, they would topple the current British record-holders from the top spot less than two months after their win. The lucky winner would instantly become richer than singers Harry Styles, who is worth an estimated £100 million, and Adele, worth an estimated £150 million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The jackpot would also dwarf the £2 million prize money that awaits each of the Wimbledon winners this year - meaning they would need to win the championship 93 times to compete with Tuesday's prize. Their wealth would instantly outstrip that of Joe and Jess Thwaite from Gloucester, who scooped a record-breaking £184 million EuroMillions jackpot less than two months ago. The blockbuster win would make the UK the luckiest EuroMillions nation, overtaking France's … [Read more...] about EuroMillions jackpot could make you UK’s biggest ever lottery winner with incredible £186MILLION up for grabs TONIGHT

When Mr Javid resigned as chancellor in February 2020, after losing a power struggle with Mr Johnson's former adviser Dominic Cummings, he tweeted about his successor: "The Force is strong in young Sunak." Just over a year earlier, when he was still number two to Mr Javid at the Treasury, Mr Sunak tweeted a picture of the pair of them at the cinema, where they had just been to see The Rise of Skywalker. July 5, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

TORY vice chair Bim Afolami quit live on TV tonight as Boris Johnson faces the biggest leadership crisis of his premiership. The MP for Hitchin and Harpenden backed calls for the PM to stand down after Rishi Sunak sensationally quit as chancellor and Sajid Javid resigned as health secretary. Speaking to TalkTV after the resignations of the two senior Cabinet members , Mr Afolami said he too would have to step down from his position. The MP said: "After recent allegations about the former deputy chief whip and other things that have happened over recent weeks, I just don't think the Prime Minister any longer has, not just my support, but he doesn't have, I don't think, the support of the party, or indeed the country any more. "I think for that reason he should step down." Mr Afolami said he was "probably not" the party's vice chairman "after having said that".
