Liz Truss’s plans to slash taxes could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, the boss of Legal & General has said. Nigel Wilson, the influential City grandee and chief executive of the UK’s biggest pensions manager, said that cutting taxes on businesses could boost the attractiveness of Britain as a destination for international investors. Attracting overseas money could soften the blow as the economy heads into a recession, Mr Wilson said. "Reducing the tax burden will be seen by international investors [as a sign] that the country is open for business,” he said. It comes as Ms Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the two candidates vying to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, continue to trade blows about whether immediate tax cuts would boost economic growth or stoke inflation. Ms Truss is in favour of rapidly cutting taxes in the hope it will stimulate economic activity, while Mr Sunak argues that slashing taxes now will only serve to prolong the … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief

UK energy bills now expected to hit £4,266 from January
Annual energy bills for average households in the UK are now forecast to hit £4,266 as gas and electricity prices continue to spiral. The grim prediction has been made by consultancy Cornwall Insight, which expects regulator Ofgem to lift its price cap higher than initially expected. In the first three months from January the price cap is expected to hit £4,266, meaning average households will pay £650 more compared to estimates of just last week. From October this year, the price cap – based on the wholesale cost of energy – is now expected to be £3,582 – compared to £1,971 today. Ofgem has said prices can be adjusted every three months to give energy firms a chance to adjust to volatile an rapidly changing costs. Principal consultant at Cornwall, Dr Craig Lowrey, said that despite prices steadily rising, the latest jump in forecasts was a ‘fresh shock’. He added: ‘The cost-of-living crisis was already top of the news agenda as more and more people face fuel … [Read more...] about UK energy bills now expected to hit £4,266 from January
WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature
WhatsApp is bringing in a new screenshot-blocking feature that resembles SnapChat to tempt privacy-conscious users back to the service as parent company Meta struggles with shrinking sales. The changes include the ability to block screenshots of time-limited messages, hiding one’s online presence from other WhatsApp users and leaving group chats without notifying others. WhatsApp owner Meta’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: “We'll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.” The ability to block screenshots mirrors one of the main functions of SnapChat, which alerts the sender of a time-limited photo if it is screenshotted before it self-deletes. Joseph Teasdale, head of tech at Enders Analysis, said the changes were “fairly minor product updates designed to keep WhatsApp competitive”. He added: “Mark Zuckerberg seems to be trying to return to the founder-led tech startup model of placing huge, bold … [Read more...] about WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature

Rise in number of severely obese people being rescued from their homes
Firefighters are rescuing more severely obese people from their homes than ever before. Lifting equipment and slings are being used to hoist residents who are too heavy to leave their homes by themselves. Crews often need to remove bannisters, windows and walls to aid the complex rescues that can take hours. Home Office figures show firefighters in England attended a record 1,641 ‘bariatric assists’ in 2020-21. Tam Fry, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said: ‘Sadly, these figures will continue to rise for many years to come. ‘Even when the government’s latest plans to tackle obesity have been finally implemented, there will still be hundreds requiring rescue teams to get them out of their homes and into hospital for treatment. ‘Thirty years of political indifference are responsible for this desperate situation.’ Bariatric assists is the term for specialist obesity treatments, including coming to their aid because their bulk has left them trapped … [Read more...] about Rise in number of severely obese people being rescued from their homes
Calories on menus? Nothing can convince me that’s a good idea
From ages 15 to 20, I kept a calorie diary. I logged meals intermittently: I’d start out listing every calorie I’d eat throughout the day, down to the spoonful of milk in my coffee, then miss a couple of days and stop for a while, only to start the cycle all over again a week or a month later. It would sometimes be external factors prompting me to start again – feeling overwhelmed by school chores, a boy I had a crush on not liking me back, seeing a picture of Kate Moss on the teenage magazines I fixated over. You know, the usual. But more often, my cruel exercises of control over my own body were prompted by my obsession with calories, and my belief that my worth as a person – as a woman – directly correlated to the amount I consumed on a given day. One day I’d eat more than I intended to, which is easy enough when you intend to starve, and the counting would begin again. I lived by numbers on packets, numbers on spreadsheets, numbers I knew by heart and added up … [Read more...] about Calories on menus? Nothing can convince me that’s a good idea
