THE NHS has been a part of British society for almost 70 years, delivering world-class health care to the nation, free at the point of use. Here we look back at the birth of the service and why it was created in the first place. When is the NHS 70th anniversary? The National Health Service turns 70 on July 5, 2018. It marks exactly seven decades since the beginning of the service promising healthcare from cradle to grave, free at the point of use for everyone. Today the NHS is the UK’s largest employer, with over 1.5 million staff from all over the world and more than 350 different careers. Its budget for 2018-19 is £126.3billion. A special thank you has been paid by Hartlepool’s runners to the 70-year-old national health service. The town’s parkrunners turned out in force for one of its weekly 5k events - but this one had special significance as it was dedicated to the NHS 70th birthday celebrations. So, it was appropriate, given it takes place just a stone’s through from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, that the Colney Lane run was among them. Organisers said 280 people had taken part in Saturday’s event, with many people running in fancy dress, 90 first-timers and 90 people recording new personal bests. More than 20 volunteers helped to make the event possible and staff from NHS and health charities attended to give out information and answered questions about how to stay healthy.
