Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war
The head of the Army today says the UK must be ready for war with Russia. Four months on from Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, General Sir Patrick Sanders is set to compare the assault to the rise of Nazi Germany . He will say that Britain is facing its "1937 moment" and must be ready to "fight and win" to ward off the threat from Russia. In his first public speech as Chief of the General Staff , Sir Patrick will say the UK must be prepared to "act rapidly" to contain Russian expansionism. Nato last night pledged to massively increase its forces available on high alert to more than 300,000 troops, a more-than seven-fold increase. Sir Patrick's intervention is likely to put pressure on Mr Johnson to maintain the size of the Armed Forces after plans were announced to reduce troop numbers in a move to a more modern military. Defence editor Danielle Sheridan reports that, in a separate speech today, Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, is to call for increased … [Read more...] about Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war

The Queen has made her second appearance of the day as she triggered the lighting of the principal Jubilee beacon at Windsor Castle. At the same time thousands of beacons were lit in villages, towns and cities across the UK to honour the Queen's 70-year reign. Her Majesty started the ceremony from the quadrangle at Windsor Castle, with the Duke of Cambridge representing his grandmother, alongside other members of the Royal Family, at Buckingham Palace, the site of the "Tree of Trees" principal beacon. Although traditionally the principal beacon would be set on fire, this year it took the form of a near-70ft light installation. At Windsor Castle, the Queen, wearing a green jacket, gloves and glasses, pressed the quadrangle to start the lighting of the Jubilee. As she walked from the castle's sovereign entrance into the Quadrangle, the Queen was greeted by more than 100 people who live within the walls of the royal home and were invited to the event. Boris Johnson facing Cabinet backlash over Chris Pincher sex pest allegations
Boris Johnson is facing a Cabinet backlash over his handling of allegations against Chris Pincher, amid anger among ministers at being asked to defend the affair. Speaking to The Telegraph on Sunday night, sources close to three Cabinet ministers criticised the Prime Minister’s decision to appoint Mr Pincher to the role of deputy chief whip and expressed dismay at having to publicly answer questions about what Mr Johnson knew about claims of sexual impropriety. Comparing the situation to the sleaze scandals that dogged the latter years of the Major government, one said: “It just increases the feeling that we are in late John Major-era territory even more – when you are trying to appease people, you are more inclined to turn blind eye to bad behaviour.” They added that Mr Johnson was in the “completely invidious position” of trying to placate his allies because he did not want to “lose their support”. The source added that: “My understanding from ministers is there is a … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson facing Cabinet backlash over Chris Pincher sex pest allegations

Airlines were even forced to "fish" customers out of security queues for final calls, said another passenger, who spent two and a half hours waiting inside the airport. Footage capturing "hundreds of cases" piled up at baggage reclaim, which is the responsibility of the airlines and their ground handlers, was also posted to Twitter this morning.
