THE record heatwave sparked the worst day of fires since the Blitz, it emerged yesterday. As wildfires swept across Britain , London Fire Brigade alone received more than 2,600 calls — over eight times higher than usual. The capital saw 41 houses reduced to rubble . London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “It was the busiest day since the Second World War. “They dealt with more than a dozen simultaneous fires requiring 30 engines, a couple requiring 15, and some requiring 12.” Fifteen of the country’s 51 Fire and Rescue Services declared major incidents as temperatures hit a high of 40.3C (104F). A dad has won a stunning £3million Cornwall mansion after entering a draw with a £25 ticket. Uttam Parmar, 58, won the keys to the stunning four-bedroom house after entering the Omaze Million Pound House Draw. The operations manager entered the draw in July and was stunned he won the home that boasts panoramic views of the Camel Estuary. Dad-of-one Uttam currently lives with his wife of 32 years, Raki, 53, in their current four-bedroom house close to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. He said he was in hospital when the Omaze team broke the news. Uttam said: "When Omaze called to tell us we’d won a prize, we were actually at the hospital. The Met Office ’s amber alert for extreme heat has been extended until next Tuesday, with the national forecaster believing there is a one in five chance the country will record its highest ever temperature. And with some predicting the heat could hit a scorching 40C, officials have not ruled out that the first-ever national heatwave emergency could be declared.
