A SERVING cop has been blasted by a judge after losing his 12th employment tribunal in ten years. Det Con Derrick Quarm, 44, was told his latest claim of racial discrimination was “totally without merit”. He asked for £25,000 in “compensation for injury to feelings” after saying colleagues buried a report he compiled on police corruption. The Met denied the allegations and called them “wild, unfounded and entirely unsupported”. Judge Julie Jones rejected the claim at a preliminary hearing in East London and ruled Quarm produced no supporting evidence. The former paratrooper joined the Met in 1997 and made his first claim against the force in 2008 after being overlooked for promotion eight times. MOST READ IN UK NEWSFEELING LUCKY? Question: What next, now that the employment tribunal fees have been dropped after being ruled unlawful? Answer: In July 2017 the Supreme Court ruled that the employment tribunal fees introduced in 2013 were unlawful and as a result were abolished immediately. In the four years when a fee was required in order to put forward a claim, the numbers overall dropped by 80 per cent and there was a 91 per cent drop in sex discrimination claims. It was felt that many people who would have normally made a claim were not able to, due to the costs involved and therefore this was considered a discrimination in itself. Fees are being refunded by the Government to people who made a claim during the period and as a result of the fees being scrapped, there has already been an increase of 64 per cent in the number of claims made, and that is expected to rise further, and many will likely be from the period when fees were in place. We would recommend that businesses take a look back over … [Read more...] about How will law change affect employment tribunal cases?

A year ago, members of the judiciary – including six High Court judges in their 50s – brought a successful action at the Central London Employment Tribunal. Age discrimination claims were brought by a total of 210 serving judges against the Justice Secretary and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). After a ruling in the judges’ favour, the Justice Secretary and MoJ brought a challenge at the Employment Appeal Tribunal. In a decision announced on Monday, Sir Alan Wilkie dismissed their appeals. The employment tribunal action centred on a new judicial pension scheme that came into force in April 2015, which provides judges with … [Read more...] about Government loses employment tribunal appeal over judges’ pension scheme
