Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?
The British opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer has said there is no going back on Brexit, in a speech on Monday night. Instead, he offered a new slogan as part of a drive to ensure Britain thrives: "Make Brexit Work". "There are some who say 'we don’t need to make Brexit work — we need to reverse it'," the Labour leader told the Centre for European Reform (CER) . "I couldn’t disagree more." "Let me be very clear. Under Labour, Britain will not go back into the EU. We will not be joining the single market. We will not be joining a customs union." It represents a major policy shift for Starmer — who in the run-up to Brexit called for a deal to be put to a second referendum, and lauded the benefits of the free movement of workers, now consigned to the past. It also further distances the country's current direction from the fiery debates and deadlock in the aftermath of the 2016 referendum, with the two largest parties firmly wedded to the UK's departure from the … [Read more...] about Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?
UK economic outlook has deteriorated, Bank of England warns
Published 4 hours ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The economic outlook for the UK and the rest of the world has "deteriorated materially", the Bank of England has warned. Energy and fuel costs are rising rapidly around the world, pushing up prices in general more quickly. However, UK banks are in a position to weather even a severe economic downturn, the Bank said. It told banks to keep more money in rainy day funds to ensure they can weather any storm. The Bank's comments came in its latest Financial Stability Report. International forecasters such as the IMF and OECD have said Britain is more susceptible to recession and persistently high inflation than other Western countries, all of which are grappling with energy and commodity market shocks. Why is the UK economy suffering more than other countries? … [Read more...] about UK economic outlook has deteriorated, Bank of England warns
Why is the UK economy suffering more than other countries?
Faisal Islam @faisalislam on Twitter Published 4 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Up until now it has been difficult to pick out much difference between the UK's economic numbers and those across Europe and the world. The size of the common global economic shocks from the pandemic and from Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been the overwhelming driver of high inflation and slower growth for most European countries. But in recent days, the Bank of England governor, Andrew Bailey, has warned inflation is set to be higher for longer here in the UK, and growth in the economy weaker too. These gloomy forecasts echoed those made by the International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which has 38 member countries. On Wednesday, Mr Bailey told a European Central Bank forum that "the UK economy is probably … [Read more...] about Why is the UK economy suffering more than other countries?

Doctors branded ‘delusional’ for 30pc pay rise demand
After rail workers and barristers took to the picket lines in an effort to prevent their pay from falling far behind inflation, doctors are preparing industrial action of their own. At the British Medical Association’s annual conference, doctors said a real-terms pay cut in the last 12 years means they have effectively lost millions of pounds. GPs have also voted in favour of industrial action over a new contract that forces practices to open on Saturdays, expressing solidarity with rail unions by urging fellow medics to “channel our inner Mick Lynch” in protest at the new terms. But rather than seeking a pay rise slightly higher than the 3pc public sector cap sought by the Government, in exceptional cases — or even in line with the 11pc figure that inflation is expected to hit in October — the BMA is preparing to call for a 30pc increase over the next five years, one of the biggest demands in the history of industrial relations. “Calls for pay rises of up to 30pc are … [Read more...] about Doctors branded ‘delusional’ for 30pc pay rise demand
