British nationals who have retired to EU countries including Spain and France will no longer have their healthcare covered by the NHS in the event of no Brexit deal, the government has said. The confirmation will come as a blow to around 190,000 British citizens retired in the EU in places such as the Spanish Costas, Provence in France and Tuscany in Italy. It could also add to the burden on the NHS if pensioners believe they have no option but to return to the UK for treatment. The government has previously admitted it is cheaper to pay Spain and France to look after Britons than have them fly home. Currently pensioners can get treatment reimbursed by the NHS under an EU-wide set of reciprocal arrangements. “It is another example of how those advocating no deal are playing with the lives of British citizens living in other EU countries,” said Colin Yeo, an immigration lawyer and freedom of movement campaigner. “Many of these politicians and pundits probably … [Read more...] about UK retirees in EU will lose free healthcare under no-deal Brexit

HOUSEHOLD incomes are rising faster than for key European neighbours, a think-tank reveals. The UK’s growth contrasts with France and Italy which saw a decline. At home, figures were up 0.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2018, reversing a 0.6 per cent drop in the previous three months. In France for January-March real household income per capita was down 0.6 per cent and in Italy 0.2 per cent. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development data highlights “significant variations” among nations. It reports that for the whole EU, the same yardstick dipped 0.1 per cent in the first quarter. The data marks an improvement for long-term UK trends in real household income versus growth in GDP per head. The latter saw a 0.1 per cent rise in January-March. The OECD found that since 2010, of countries tracked, the UK has had the biggest gap between the two measures — meaning economic growth was ahead of income change for eight years, at 7.6 percentage … [Read more...] about Household incomes are rising faster in the UK than in key European neighbours
The service industry in the UK is experiencing a labour shortage because of a major disruption in the flow of EU migrants, the BBC reported on Monday. The UK workforces expanded by a net 7,000 EU nationals between 2017 and 2018, compared to 148,00 between 2016 and 2017. According to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, up to 40% of employers have experienced a “supply shock” and difficulties in recruitment, especially in the health and hospitality sectors. The shock is also felt in IT, transport, and construction. The survey was based on interviews with 2000 employees and has affected lo, medium and high skill jobs sectors. For every skilled vacancy, there were six applicants rather than eight; for every unskilled job there were 20 applicants instead of 24. So far, the weaker supply of labour has not translated into a substantial increase in wages, whilst inflation is eroding purchasing power in rents, food, and energy. With unemployment at … [Read more...] about Major disruption in EU migration triggers labour supply shock in the UK
Brexit negotiations appear to be in trouble, with seeming deadlock between Britain and the EU on the issues of the Northern Ireland border and the form a potential trade deal might take. With just three months left until the October talks deadline and few routes to a solution, many are predicting a no-deal. But what does no-deal mean in practice? No transition period Theresa May has negotiated a transition period with the EU, during which the UK would continue to follow EU rules (without any say in what they are) for just under two years after it leaves the EU in March 2019. This “implementation period” is supposed to allow time for new post-Brexit arrangements to be put into place – such as a new trade deal for British goods. But this transition period is conditional on a withdrawal agreement being signed. If there is no withdrawal agreement, there is no transition period, and the UK economy faces an abrupt cliff-edge. Trade takes a hit Under this cliff-edge, … [Read more...] about Brexit: What happens if UK leaves the EU with no deal?
