The main conservative group in the European Parliament will remain the largest bloc after Sunday's elections, but has lost ground and will no wield a majority in coalition with its center-left ally. According to a projection based on partial results and exit polling, and released by the EU parliament, the center-right EPP group is on course to have the most seats in the assembly with 173, down from 216. But, with the center-left Socialists and Democrats (S&D) projected to win 147 seats, down from 185, the two mainstream parties between them will no longer have a majority and will have to reach out to liberals if they plan to maintain a "cordon sanitaire" and exclude the far-right from decision making. Under the projection -- which could still shift as results come in -- the liberal ALDE group, now joined by French President Emmanuel Macron's Renaissance movement, could increase its seats from 69 to 102. The three mainstream parties would thus have a majority in the 751-seat … [Read more...] about Centrist bloc loses majority as far-right gains in EU vote

When it comes to Thursday’s election to the European Parliament, make no mistake: your vote could be decisive. Yes, I realise this is a platitude that – in theory at least – applies to every election. But on this occasion, there is genuinely scope for Gibraltarian voters to make a real difference as to who represents us in the European Parliament. To illustrate why, just look back to the last European election in 2014. On that occasion, just 33% of eligible voters in Gibraltar turned out to vote. Put another way, two out of every three voters did not bother. The lion’s share of support in Gibraltar went to the Liberal Democrats, whose list of candidates back then was topped by Sir Graham Watson, a stalwart champion of Gibraltar in the European Parliament and elsewhere. The Liberal Democrats obtained just over 160,000 votes in the south west England and Gibraltar region – 4,822 from Gibraltar – but it was not enough to secure one of the six … [Read more...] about In EU election, Gibraltarian votes matter
COPS are probing pro-Brexit "sabotage" attempts to disrupt the rail network after homemade devices designed to stop trains were clipped to tracks. The short-circuit devices were discovered on tracks last week with a note threatening to "bring this country to its knees" if Britain doesn't leave the EU. If successful, they would have caused chaos for signal workers by making it look like a train was stationary on the track when there wasn't one. But the devices in Nottinghamshire and Cambridgeshire failed because of safeguards introduced to comply with EU regulations, the Mirror reports. The handwritten notes read: "Government betrayal. Leave means leave. We will bring this country to its knees if we don't leave." British Transport Police confirmed they were investigating the two sabotage attempts. ACC Sean O’Callaghan from British Transport Police, said: “This was a serious and deliberate attempt by someone to cause significant sabotage and disruption to Britain’s rail … [Read more...] about Cops probe ‘pro-Brexit attempts’ to disrupt rail network with notes clipped to devices threatening to ‘bring country to its knees’ if UK stays in EU
RED wine, cheese, cured meat…they’re just the fun ones.Spain exports a wealth of fantastic produce to the world, and especially to the UK – €4 bn-worth if we’re counting. When the British Isles shiver – which is often – the population relies on a harvest-load of fruit and veg from Spain. But Brexit looks set to seriously threaten UK imports, affecting everyone from hipster London ‘foodie’ enclaves to budget supermarket vegetable aisles.Waiting times at borders, import tariffs and working restrictions could all see the inflow of Spanish food and drink into Britain dwindle to a trickle. The decline already seemed to be in motion in the months following the 2016 EU referendum. In the first year after the vote, sales of Spanish goods to Britain fell by 6%.According to the Bank of Spain the ‘agri-food’ sector, along with car manufacturing, represented almost half of the overall decline in sales.Things look even worse when you … [Read more...] about BREXIT FOOD MAP: Which Spanish produce will be most affected when the UK leaves the EU?
Britain’s manufacturers are in despair at the failure of politicians to end the Brexit impasse, according to the CBI, which reported a drop in output in March as businesses cut back production. Export order books increased among the 358 manufacturers in the survey, supported by the low level of sterling, but this was cancelled out by a decline in domestic demand to leave the industry in a weakening position ahead of a decision in parliament on Brexit. The total orders balance fell back to +1% in March after picking up to +6% in February from a three-month low of -1% in January, the CBI said. Prospects for the industry were likely to worsen following the recent slowing in the global economy, which was expected to undermine the demand from foreign buyers for UK manufactured goods. “All in all, though,” it said, “the continued threat of a no-deal Brexit poses the biggest risk to the outlook for UK manufacturers.” Tom Crotty, the group director of the … [Read more...] about UK manufacturers in despair at Brexit impasse, says CBI
