Borrowing to pay for college is about to get more expensive – despite the push for the Biden administration to cancel billions of dollars in debt for millions of student loan borrowers. That's because the interest rates on federal student loans are set to go up on July 1. The Biden administration has extended the federal student loan payment pause, which fixes interest rates at 0% through at least August 31. That means borrowers won't feel the impact of the interest rate hike immediately. But the federal student loan fixed interest rates are by law based on the Treasury Department 10-year note auction in mid-May, so the rates for new loans change every year regardless of the payment pause. For borrowers taking out new federal undergraduate student loans starting in July for the 2022-2023 academic year, interest rates will be 4.99%, up from 3.73% for the 2021-2022 school year. Federal loan rates for graduate students will be 6.54%, up from 5.28%. The interest rates for federal … [Read more...] about It’s about to get more expensive to take out federal student loans — here’s why

FDA authorizes Pfizer’s COVID-19 booster shots for children 5 to 11 years old
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 years old, at least five months after completion of a primary series, officials announced Tuesday. "While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized, and children may also experience longer term effects, even following initially mild disease," FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf said in a statement Tuesday. "The FDA is authorizing the use of a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age to provide continued protection against COVID-19," he added. Pfizer asked the FDA in April to authorize its booster vaccines for younger children, after it submitted data that indicated their shot was safe and generated a strong immune response in children ages 5 to … [Read more...] about FDA authorizes Pfizer’s COVID-19 booster shots for children 5 to 11 years old
Teen backed after mom and stepdad spend his inheritance on new house
A teenager has received widespread support and advice after revealing his mom and stepdad spent part of his inheritance on their new house. The 17-year-old posted the story to Reddit , under username Reddit_randouser, as he explained his dad passed away two years ago. He was under the impression his father had left him some inheritance, which he'd be eligible to receive once he turned 18. Posting on the site's Am I The A**hole forum, he said: "I'm also getting survivors benefits that my mom uses for me when I need things so is not like she used this inheritance for me." His suspicions were aroused when his mom and stepdad bought a house after previously living in an apartment. The teen wrote: "They never even had enough to go for a vacation or something but all of a sudden they had for a large house out of nowhere. My mom looked guilty about it until she finally admitted they used some of what my dad left me to buy the house. I lost my s***. "They tried to justify that … [Read more...] about Teen backed after mom and stepdad spend his inheritance on new house
Jamie Oliver blasts Boris Johnson’s decision to bin his BOGOF ban as a ‘wasted opportunity’ to tackle childhood obesity
Jamie Oliver has blasted Boris Johnson over the decision to bin a ban on buy-one-get-one-free offers for unhealthy foods as a 'wasted opportunity' to tackle obesity. The celebrity chef joined health campaigners who have criticised the Government after it delayed a ban on two-for-one offers on unhealthy and fattening foods. Oliver said a ban on TV junk food adverts before a 9pm watershed, which has been put on hold for a year, was key to protecting child health. Ministers have said they are also deferring the ban on buy-one-get-one-free deals for foods and drinks high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) in England for 12 months so they can review the impact on family budgets in the face of the cost-of-living crisis. The move has been welcomed by the industry and by some Tory MPs opposed to the state interfering in how people spend their money, but it has alarmed health campaigners. Jamie Oliver, pictured, has hit out at the Government's decision to bin a ban on … [Read more...] about Jamie Oliver blasts Boris Johnson’s decision to bin his BOGOF ban as a ‘wasted opportunity’ to tackle childhood obesity

PICTURED: Pennsylvania Republican candidate Kathy Barnette marching toward the Capitol on January 6
Pennsylvania Republican Kathy Barnette has been identified in a newly surfaced photograph marching toward the Capitol on Jen. 6th amid former President Donald Trump 's election overturn effort. Barnette, who is in a tight three-way race with two other Republicans, has pulled into contention, in part by stressing that she is a 'byproduct of rape' following the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would strike down Roe v. Wade. Some Republicans say the conservative commentator hasn't been properly vetted, and have pointed to her statements on Muslims and homosexuality. But Barnette has argued that she is the true MAGA candidate in the race, where Trump is backing TV physician Dr. Mehmet Oz and hedge funder Dave McCormick, who has more establishment backing. Pennsylvania GOP Senate candidate Kathy Barnette (center in hat) can be seen marching near Proud Boys members on Jan. 6 On Monday, NBC reported that Barnette can be seen in images … [Read more...] about PICTURED: Pennsylvania Republican candidate Kathy Barnette marching toward the Capitol on January 6
