Want unfettered free speech? Get far-right attacks like the Buffalo shooting
On Saturday 14 May, an 18-year-old man walked into a supermarket in Buffalo and shot 13 people, killing 10 . A few days before carrying out the killings, the shooter published a 180-page manifesto on Google Docs detailing his motives, which were largely racist and antisemitic in nature. Similarly to Brenton Tarrant , who massacred 51 people and injured 40 others at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, the Buffalo shooter attributed the views which caused him to carry out the killings to 4chan ; an online message board-based forum where users are able to post completely anonymously and with very little in the way of oversight or restrictions. 4chan, along with similar websites like 8chan – another anonymous forum which has also been cited by mass shooters – have a reputation for attracting the absolute human detritus of the internet. Their refusal to provide oversight to their users predictably result in them becoming hotbeds of neo-Nazi rhetoric, … [Read more...] about Want unfettered free speech? May is Mental Health Awareness Month: COVID may have normalized mental health struggles
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and, according to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of anxiety and depression globally increased by a massive 25% in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic alone. Social isolation was cited as one of the reasons for the increased stress felt by so many during the pandemic. Add in constraints on people’s ability to work or to seek support from loved ones, engage in their communities, loneliness, fear, grief, financial worries and exhaustion from those who work in health care and the perfect storm of a mental health crisis is created. Mental health care providers in Louisiana say they have felt the crisis up close and personal. “The pandemic has challenged the resiliency of people who would previously have had no empathy for anxiety and depression," said Roy Petitfils, LPC, whose counseling practice is based in Lafayette with Pax Renewal Center. Petitfils said the pandemic forced many to deal with realities that were once … [Read more...] about May is Mental Health Awareness Month: COVID may have normalized mental health struggles
Greenpeace activists scale Thames jetty to block oil tanker from docking
Greenpeace says its activists have stopped a tanker carrying 33,000 tonnes of Russian diesel from docking in the Thames by occupying parts of the jetty. The 12 protesters travelled overnight by boat, landing at the docking place at Navigator Terminals in Grays, and unfurled a banner reading "fossil fuels war." Essex Police said it has arrested eight people on suspicion of aggravated trespass and is working "with our partners to bring a number of others to safety". "Policing is not anti-protest, but we must intervene where there is a risk to life or where there is a suspicion laws are being broken," the police said in a statement. The 183-metre long Andromeda tanker is carrying fuels from the Russian port of Primorsk, supplied by the LLC KINEF refinery, while travelling under a Greek flag, according to Greenpeace. Advertisement The campaigning organisation has been tracking Russian fossil fuel shipments online and in April estimated the UK had … [Read more...] about Greenpeace activists scale Thames jetty to block oil tanker from docking
Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong prepared to take massive financial hit to join Manchester United’s rivals
Frenkie de Jong favours a move to Manchester City over Manchester United and would even be willing to take a huge financial hit to play for Pep Guardiola ’s side, according to reports. The Dutch midfielder appears increasingly likely to leave Camp Nou this summer as Barca look to raise transfer funds, with incoming United boss Erik ten Hag keen for a reunion with his former Ajax charge at Old Trafford. De Jong has struggled somewhat to live up to his £67million price tag since moving to Spain and Barcelona would be begrudgingly willing to accept a fee in the region of what they paid three years ago. City had also tried to sign the Netherlands international back in 2019 but were unable to match Barca’s £400,000-a-week salary offer. But, according to The Sun , the Catalan club’s precarious financial situation means De Jong has since taken a significant salary reduction and his wages are now more in line with what City are prepared to pay. Additionally, the … [Read more...] about Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong prepared to take massive financial hit to join Manchester United’s rivals
