Published 4 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The mother of a six-year-old boy from Londonderry has thanked a stranger for saving her son's life at a County Donegal beach. David Moore was playing with friends on Culdaff Beach last week when their football rolled into the water. David, unaware of the dangers, tried to retrieve the ball himself before he was taken out to sea by a rip current. "I ran down to the water and just couldn't see him, that's when my hero came to the rescue," Sarah Moore said. Riptides, or rip currents , are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that can quickly quickly drag people out to deeper water. The mother-of-two said that she and her children go to Culdaff beach regularly during the summer months and decided that morning to spend the day there. Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’
Facebook users in Iraq are exploiting the platform's lack of Arabic and Kurdish-language moderation policies in order to purchase guns online, according to a report. The study by the Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has found that the sale of weapons in Iraq is "rife" in Facebook comment sections. Social media giants have long been accused of failing to effectively moderate harmful and dangerous content, particularly in regions such as the Middle East. Meta — the parent company of Facebook — has fewer resources to tackle content in various languages and dialects than in English. The lack of moderation in Arabic and Kurdish has created an open gun market on Facebook in Iraq, said Moustafa Ayad, the ISD Executive Director for Africa, Middle East & Asia. "It was relatively easy to find weapons for sale on comments sections of very large Facebook pages, pages with over 2 million followers," Ayad told Euronews. According to his research, some of the … [Read more...] about Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’

Climate change driving unprecedented forest fire loss
PARIS: Forest fires supercharged by climate change are burning twice as much global tree cover as 20 years ago, according to a data Wednesday showing the equivalent of 16 football pitches are now lost every minute. The research showed in unprecedented detail how wildfires have progressed over the past two decades, with the blazes claiming an estimated three more million hectares each year — an area the size of Belgium — compared with 2001. The study showed that the majority of tree cover loss is occurring in the boreal forests that blanket much of Russia, Canada and Alaska, which are among the largest storers of carbon on Earth. Researchers from the University of Maryland used satellite imagery to map areas of tree cover lost, including that burned by what are known as stand-replacing forest fires. Game of Thrones Iron Throne finds new home in Tower of London ahead of House of the Dragon
The Iron Throne from Game of Thrones has found a new royal home – the Tower of London. In the hit HBO series, legend has it that the throne was constructed by Aegon I Targaryen, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms. It is said to be the ultimate symbol of conquest, and was forged from thousands of swords and knives surrendered by his enemies. Now fans of the show, and the novels by George R.R. Martin, can find out for themselves just what the imposing 12ft by 10ft throne is like to sit in. It was unveiled by Yeomen Warders – popularly known as Beefeaters – ahead of the TV premier of the new prequel series, House of the Dragon. Set 200 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, the 10-episode spin-off series focuses on the House of Targaryen and their reign in Westeros.
