Forget flags, ceremonial counties and other obscure trivia – there’s one big question for fans of TV quiz shows: who are all of these contestants? How did they get on the show? And how do they have the time? (OK, that’s three questions.) Far from the stereotypical student or retiree, Clark is in his early 30s, has a full-time high-pressure job, and a wife. Yet he also spends his free time applying for quiz shows. Thus far he’s appeared on two major BBC and ITV shows, and has had innumerable auditions for others. As we speak, he is waiting to hear back from another set of producers. “I was actually on my notice period for my old job about four years ago, and I didn’t have too much on,” he explains.... Along with 50/50, Ask the Audience and Phone a Friend, you also get the option to Ask the Host. Given that the presenter is now Jeremy Clarkson (replacing Chris Tarrant) this is an option as risky as it is amusing. As Clarkson cheerfully explained in the first show: ‘If it’s 1970s prog rock I’ll probably know the answer. If it’s anything other than that I probably won’t.’ The first contestant to test this theory was flummoxed by a question about which county cricket club is based at the Oval. Clarkson declared that he hates and despises cricket more than any other sport except perhaps golf. We all love a quiz. Except women, of course, who are “too reticent and modest” to host that venerable contest of wit and knowledge, Have I Got News For You, according to its team captains, Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. Weirdly the otherwise hyper-observant HIGNFY patriarchosaurs have failed to notice that Victoria Coren Mitchell now out-brainiacs them on Only Connect and the only person clever and ballsy enough to replace Stephen Fry on QI was Sandi Toksvig (who also previously hosted the News Quiz, the original radio version of HIGNFY). The satirical news quiz is back tonight, presented by Jeremy Paxman, with presenter Steph McGovern and comedian Josh Widdicombe as the two guest panelists. So maybe everyone does love a quiz, even women, and even young people. The latest mind-crack to hit the app store is HQ, an addictive and hyper-fast live quiz that arrives twice daily on your phone and offers not only a lively social media community but the possibility of cash prizes.
