The summer holidays are here and for families this often means long and numerous car journeys with the children. And despite having some of the safest roads in the world the higher frequency of journeys children will take this week has added extra impetus to ensuring their safety and that you stay on the right side of the law. PlayStation 3 classic Journey wasn’t the first game about traversing a vast natural expanse in a wide-eyed state of childish bliss, but it’s the one that spawned the most imitators. To say that Far: Lone Sails is among them would be selling it short. It’s part puzzle-platformer, part exploration game, that draws just as much inspiration from similarly lauded indie hits like Limbo and Inside. Like Journey, you’re on an unexplained quest with an indeterminate destination somewhere far, far to the right of the edge of the screen. But unlike Journey you’re crossing a more inhospitable wasteland, aided by the use of a clattering, steam-punk landship contraption. To make the ship move requires scurrying around inside it like a Victorian child in a factory. There are buttons on the walls, spread across different interior floors. One turns the debris you collect from the wasteland into energy, another turns the energy into locomotion, another releases the steam … [Read more...] about Far: Lone Sails review: A transfixing and atmospheric game about driving a big weird boat thing across a dry seabed
THE driving test has undergone its biggest shake-up in more than 20 years - but what will it mean for new learners? The new laws came into force in December 2017 with new manoeuvres to make it more like real-world driving for learners. Here's the lowdown. What are the new driving test laws? The independent driving part of the test will increase from ten to 20 minutes. The ability to use a sat navs will be introduced into the test. The reverse around a corner and turn in the road manoeuvres will no longer be tested. But you’ll still be tested on parallel parking, parking in a bay and pulling up on the right-hand side of the road. You’ll still be asked the "tell me" question at the start of the test but the "show me" question will be asked during the test - for example showing how to use windscreen wipers. The revised list of tasks in order to pass the new driving test also includes asking candidates to pull up on the right hand side of the road and reverse two car … [Read more...] about What are the new driving test rules, will I have to use a sat nav and when will learners have lessons on motorways?
An ex golf pro has “big plans” to transform a tired Teesside driving range into the North’s “go to” place for the sport. Craig Donaldson wants to breathe new life into Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre on Ladgate Lane and make it the “heart of the community”. Plans include a big makeover for the 30-year-old site and a cafe. Craig, a professional golfer for 25 years, has taken over the 20-bay driving range and golf shop at the centre with his wife. He said: “Thirty years ago, this was a state-of-the-art range; it was probably the most talked-about golf facility in the North, the place to be - then it sort of disappeared into the background. “I want to upgrade it and make it the go-to place for golf in the Teesside area, more accessible for non golfers. Younger people and families, not just dads and sons. “We’ll have a cafe on the range for people to get a burger and a drink, we’ll have music and hold theme nights. … [Read more...] about Ex golf pro’s plan to turn driving range into the ‘go to’ place
With Christmas approaching, party season is in full swing, and the alcohol is flowing. But is it safe to get behind the wheel of your car the next day? How about driving following an after-work drink? It's important that drivers are not over the legal limit when they are in the driving seat, as alcohol will slow the body's responses and drivers’ reaction times, meaning it is unsafe to drive. As reported by Essexlive, It’s estimated between 2010 and 2015, there were 36,900 drink driving accidents reported, and 1,410 deaths caused. Research carried out by the charity Brake found that one in five drivers admit to driving the morning after drinking the previous night. And a Freedom of Information request from LV Insurance found that arrests for drink driving in the hours 6am to 8am rose from 350 to 363, in between 2011 and 2012 - an increase of four per cent. It seems fewer people are risking driving and drinking at night, but more are choosing to drive the next morning when it … [Read more...] about How long should you wait before driving after drinking alcohol?
