A 'worst-case scenario' tsunami warning has been issued for Devon by weather experts, and people have reacted with disbelief. It isn't actually within the realms of implausibility, with historical evidence that the South West has been thrashed by large tsunami waves before. In two cases, it had devastating, fatal consequences for the locals at the time. Tsunami warnings today
The risk of more devastating tsunamis than previously estimated has risen because of climate change, according to new findings published today. Tsunamis are destructive fast-moving waves that can be triggered by earthquakes, mountain slides, or meteor impacts. They have hit the Devon and Cornwall coast at least twice before according to historians - causing large numbers of deaths and destruction. In the 11th century a massive wave was thought to have been caused by an asteroid falling at sea and in the 18th century an earthquake off Lisbon was responsible. But now because of sea-levels rising the risks for coastal communities around the world are growing. In the new study researchers warned that what was previously assumed to be the 'absolute worst case' now appears to be 'modest' for what is predicted in some locations. Previous models published in 2006 show waves up to 4.5m could hit parts of Cornwall, with lower 2m waves in the Bristol Channel and North Devon. But now those models … [Read more...] about New tsunami warning for Devon and Cornwall coasts
THE Indonesian island of Lombok has been struck by a massive magnitude 7.0 earthquake on August 5, 2018. It is the second quake to strike the holiday island in the space of a week, and has triggered a tsunami warning. Here’s the latest. Where did the earthquake strike? On Sunday, August 5, the Indonesian holiday island of Lombok was struck with a 7.0 magnitude quake, prompting a tsunami warning to be issued. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck off the north coast of the island, at around 6.21 miles underground at around 7.45pm local time. Early reports suggest at least three people have been killed. The quake was also felt for several seconds in Bali, where people ran out of houses, hotels and restaurants. Since the initial quake, authorities have recorded 27 aftershocks. The same area was struck with an earthquake on July 29. The 6.4 magnitude quake triggered landslides around Mount Rinjani, cutting off escape routes. John Bacon USA TODAY Published 1:55 p.m. UTC Aug 5, 2018 A magnitude 7.0 earthquake centered on the Indonesian island of Lombok rocked the tourist destination as well as nearby Bali, and authorities initially said the temblor could trigger a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of casualties, and the tsunami warning was dropped a short time later. Social media posts from the scene, however, showed debris scattered on streets and sidewalks. Lombok, about 50 miles east of Bali, was rocked by a magnitude 6.4 quake less than a week ago that killed 16 people. That quake injured more than 150 people, damaged thousands of homes and cut off power to many more. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency for Indonesia had reported scores of aftershocks in the hours after last week’s quake – and had warned that another major quake could be imminent. A MASSIVE earthquake has hit the holiday island of Lombok today sparking warnings of a tsunami. The island, a popular tourist destination, was hit by a magnitude 7 quake on Sunday - just a week after being rocked by an earlier earthquake that killed more than a dozen people. Authorities have issued a tsunami warning in the aftermath which covers North Lombok, East and North Bali, the north side of East Java, Southeast Madura, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The quake was felt for several seconds in Bali, where people ran out of houses, hotels and restaurants. "All the hotel guests were running so I did too. People filled the streets," said Michelle Lindsay, an Australian tourist. "A lot of officials were urging people not to panic." Other witnesses said the quake got stronger over several seconds and rattled windows and doors in their frames.
