Environmentalists will attempt to save the life of a dangerously thin beluga whale that is stranded in the Seine River west of Paris. They will on Tuesday try and move the four-metre mammal to a nearby saltwater basin so that it can be given urgent medical care. If the whale does not die during the transfer -- and then responds well to treatment -- it could be released back into the open sea. Conservationists were hoping to spare it the fate of another, an orca, that strayed into and then died in the Seine in May. Sea Shepherd France (SSF) described its plans to move the beluga -- which is native to the icy waters around the Arctic -- as an “enormous operation”. While the mission carries serious risks for the whale because of stress, it will not survive much longer in the Seine’s fresh water, added SSF. French media said rescuers may use a barge and then a truck to relocate the whale, yet they have not yet revealed their tactics explicitly. Making work friends is hard, but doing it can make you more ‘happy and satisfied’ – here’s how
There are many ways to improve your performance at work. You could do some physical activity beforehand to strengthen mental health , for example. You could write down your priorities to heighten productivity . And you could treat yourself to that large latte to get a boost of positive energy. Another element of work life that could ultimately improve both that and your performance: Having friends at work. "Research shows that one of the best predictors for how happy and satisfied people are with their workplace is the quality of their relationships with their co-workers," former monk Jay Shetty recently told CNBC Make It via email, after speaking at the American Express Business Class Live conference. In fact, women who say they have a best friend at work are more than twice as likely to be engaged in what they're doing, according to a 2018 Gallup poll . Especially for those who've been working from home since the pandemic , the modern workplace can pose some … [Read more...] about Making work friends is hard, but doing it can make you more ‘happy and satisfied’ – here’s how
Esther Rantzen cried so hard when British hero was introduced to kids he saved from Nazis
In a television career decades-long, this is the only moment which has broken Dame Esther Rantzen. It prompted her to cry so hard, she had to step away. Recording had to be paused. That moment came in 1988, when she was presenting That’s Life to an audience of up to 18 million, during that unforgettable episode in which the story of Sir Nicholas Winton was told for the very first time. The humanitarian, who afterwards came to be known as the British Schindler, had rescued 669 mostly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia before the outbreak of WW2, but in the intervening decades had barely told a soul. It was the moment it was revealed he was unknowingly sitting next to three of those 669, none of which he had met before. And in which they learnt for the first time who was responsible for saving their lives - and got to say thank-you. It is television gold now to be recreated in a new BBC biopic about Sir Nicholas, in which he will be played by Sir Anthony Hopkins. “It was … [Read more...] about Esther Rantzen cried so hard when British hero was introduced to kids he saved from Nazis
Celebrities rebel against Instagram boss as he tries to match TikTok
Among the photo captions of his 500-year-old house in Lindos, Rhodes, Jasper Conran had some advice for Instagram’s chief executive. With its ornate door knocker and mosaic floors, the house has remained in its original form for five centuries, Conran wrote. The British fashion designer had captured this stillness in photographs, for years the defining feature of Instagram that made it popular with celebrities and brought in billions of dollars in advertising revenue. But Conran expressed a growing frustration over a redesign that millions of users feel is being forced upon them by the social media app. “Please don’t let us down in the frankly callous way that you appear to be doing. Make Instagram Instagram again; either that or create a parallel platform that doesn’t wipe out the existing one,” he wrote to Adam Mosseri, Instagram chief at Meta. He warned the app threatened to “kill off the skill and hard work that so many millions” have put into photographs. Instagram is … [Read more...] about Celebrities rebel against Instagram boss as he tries to match TikTok
Vicky Pattison was ‘terrified’ of becoming alcoholic amid ‘turbulent’ relationship with booze
Vicky Pattison broke down as she opened up about her fear of becoming an alcoholic like her father amid her own turbulent relationship with booze. The ex-Geordie Shore star, 34, was tearful as she appeared on The One Show yesterday to speak about her new documentary My Dad: Alcohol and Me. Speaking to hosts Alex Scott and Ronan Keating, she explained that she had always had a "complicated" relationship with alcohol and that she is finally able to talk about it. "I'm 35 this year," she said. "That was exactly when my dad started really to lose his battle with his addiction. "That's terrifying for me. I'm very well aware that my turbulent relationship with alcohol has got us into trouble in the past and been a concern. Vicky Pattison opened up about her alcohol struggle ( Image: mirror.co.uk) "I couldn't get the thought out of my mind that this year it was all going to unravel, it felt like this predetermined conclusion and no matter how I tried – no matter how … [Read more...] about Vicky Pattison was ‘terrified’ of becoming alcoholic amid ‘turbulent’ relationship with booze
I’m 21 and already having to think about having kids because of my endometriosis
Just like clockwork, I’m back in the hospital waiting room. My leg bounces as I wait for my name to be called, hoping that this month’s consultation will have better news than the last. But it never does. ‘Maybe next month!’ my nurse will tell me – knowing there’s nothing she can say that will actually ease my frustration at an ever-growing waiting list for surgery. I lift up my sleeve, ready for my monthly dose of Prostap – a drug that keeps my body in a menopausal state. I clench my fist in preparation for the pain, but the injection will never hurt as much as the sound of newborns crying from down the hall. The thing is, I have chronic pain, bladder issues, and as a result of my endometriosis, I’m in a chemical menopause. After being diagnosed with endometriosis in 2019, at 19, almost seven years after my nauseating pain, heavy periods and painful sex began, I initially felt hopeful. I knew why I was in so much pain, and was optimistic that my condition would … [Read more...] about I’m 21 and already having to think about having kids because of my endometriosis
‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
Dawn Butler has opened up about one of the toughest parts of her cancer diagnosis – how to tell her loved ones without worrying them. The Labour MP, 52, has spoken candidly about it, revealing earlier this year that she thought she might die after receiving the news following a routine mammogram. She has now teamed up with Metro.co.uk to launch the campaign A Million Missed Mammograms to try and persuade those yet to have a screening to get one booked. ‘You can survive breast cancer, and the earlier you find it the better,’ the former minister said. Ms Butler has thankfully recovered, but she had to endure some incredibly difficult days along the way. On top of the uncomfortable examination, the operation to remove cancerous cells and the fear her diagnosis may become more invasive, she also found herself struggling with something many might deem relatively simple – telling her family, friends and colleagues about what she was going through. The Brent Central MP … [Read more...] about ‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
One million people have missed potentially lifesaving mammogram appointments
An MP has pledged to ‘find a million missing mammograms’ in order to save lives across the UK. Dawn Butler has teamed up with Metro.co.uk as part of a new campaign to ensure cancer diagnoses are caught as early as possible. A million women in the UK are thought to have missed their most recent mammogram screenings. Thousands more could be living with breast cancer without realising. The pandemic has already led to backlogs across the healthcare sector and, as Britain battles through the living cost crisis, people are now struggling to find time for routine appointments that could save lives. Dawn has now teamed up with Metro.co.uk to launch the ‘A Million Missed Mammograms’ campaign. The Labour politician announced her cancer diagnosis earlier this year, following a routine mammogram last November. She’s now embarking on a mission to make sure others don’t put off essential appointments. Dawn told Metro.co.uk: ‘I want to find the missing million women who … [Read more...] about One million people have missed potentially lifesaving mammogram appointments
Graeme Souness slams Manchester United star Anthony Martial: ‘You can’t rely on him – he’s dodgy like Paul Pogba’
Graeme Souness has slammed Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, claiming he does not have the right mentality to play for the Premier League giants and cannot be relied upon by Erik ten Hag. Martial looked set to start United’s Premier League opener against Brighton on Sunday before pulling up with a muscular injury in training . The Frenchman spent the second-half of last season on loan at Sevilla and that temporary move appeared to pave the way for Martial’s permanent departure from Old Trafford. But Martial impressed Ten Hag in pre-season and the Dutch boss was reportedly planning to start him up top for United against Brighton before the injury setback. Souness is surprised by Ten Hag’s verdict on Martial as the former Liverpool defender does not believe the 26-year-old has the right mindset to flourish for a club like Manchester United. The Sky Sports pundit even compared Martial with ex-United midfielder Paul Pogba and says they are both … [Read more...] about Graeme Souness slams Manchester United star Anthony Martial: ‘You can’t rely on him – he’s dodgy like Paul Pogba’
Tom Daley wishes Dame Kelly Holmes could have come out when she was a competing athlete instead of now aged 52
Tom Daley admitted he is ‘so happy’ for Dame Kelly Holmes , after the Olympic legend came out as gay last week , but wishes she would have been able to do so when she was competing. The sporting icon said she realised she was gay when she was a soldier in the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1988 at the age of 17, and kissed a female comrade. However, for 34 years she kept that part of herself hidden, out of fear of being prosecuted, since same-sex relationships were banned from the forces. But, Dame Kelly said the global pandemic showed her that it was time to be her ‘real self’ and express who she is, after remaining closeted led her to breakdowns and suicidal thoughts . Speaking on This Morning today, Olympic diver Tom shared how happy he was for Dame Kelly that she now felt as though she could come out. The 28-year-old made his brave decision to come out in 2013 via a YouTube video , when he also announced he was in a relationship with his now husband, … [Read more...] about Tom Daley wishes Dame Kelly Holmes could have come out when she was a competing athlete instead of now aged 52
