100 Women: Are rural women smashing the glass ceiling of agriculture?
Valeria Perasso Published 2 October 2017 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing "We have a lot of yams, we just need buyers," says Rosalina Ballesteros. In Montes de Maria, the hilly region on the northern coast of Colombia where she lives and works, they had a particularly good harvest this year - but demand is low and yams are rotting. So the community put out a call for help - via YouTube. "We want to invite you to buy yams and help us," says the farmer in a 40-second video that went viral in Colombia. "Yams are good for arthritis, for constipation and during the menopause," her fellow female farmers-turned-YouTubers add enthusiastically, marketing their produce. Farmer Ainagul Abdrakhmanova, a 32-year-old mother-of-five, also asked for support, but in her case from a women's self-help group that gathers in her remote mountainous village in central Kyrgystan. … [Read more...] about 100 Women: Are rural women smashing the glass ceiling of agriculture?
Vice Premier Liu He says China ready to ‘defend itself’ against US tariffs
Vice Premier and economic supremo Liu He said China was "ready to defend itself" against US President Donald Trump's planned tariffs. Liu spoke on Saturday with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, according to China's Xinhua News Agency. Liu said to Mnuchin that Trump's plan to level tariffs on nearly $50 billion (€40.4 billion) in Chinese imports violated international trade rules and that China was "ready and capable of defending its national interests and hopes both sides will remain rational," according to Xinhua. An investigation under the 1974 US Trade Act has found that China engages in unfair trade practices by obliging US investors to turn over key technologies to Chinese firms, according to US officials. However, Xinhua cited Liu as saying the investigation report "violates international trade rules and is beneficial to neither Chinese interests, US interests nor global interests." He said that Trump's executive order was not beneficial to the US or the world's … [Read more...] about Vice Premier Liu He says China ready to ‘defend itself’ against US tariffs
Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet
Rishi Sunak has quit as Chancellor and Sajid Javid has resigned as health secretary as Boris Johnson's leadership faced a fresh crisis following the Chris Pincher scandal. Mr Johnson had tonight admitted "it was a mistake" to give Mr Pincher his job as deputy chief whip and said: "I apologise for it". Mr Sunak and Mr Javid's resignations come after Downing Street was accused of lying over the Chris Pincher scandal this morning, as Lord McDonald said Mr Johnson was briefed "in person" about concerns relating to the then Foreign Office minister. Why is the UK economy suffering more than other countries?
Faisal Islam @faisalislam on Twitter Published 4 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Up until now it has been difficult to pick out much difference between the UK's economic numbers and those across Europe and the world. The size of the common global economic shocks from the pandemic and from Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been the overwhelming driver of high inflation and slower growth for most European countries. But in recent days, the Bank of England governor, Andrew Bailey, has warned inflation is set to be higher for longer here in the UK, and growth in the economy weaker too. These gloomy forecasts echoed those made by the International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which has 38 member countries.
