THE pound has strengthened against the dollar by up to 1.5 per cent on the news that Donald Trump is the next president of the United States of America.However, sterling has weakened against the euro as currency markets struggle to react to the US Presidential election.The FTSE 100 fell by 144 points, around two per cent to 6696.3 and the FTSE 250 opened 300 points down - wiping £37billion off the UK’s biggest listed companies.Initially experts said that the pound would fall by up to 10 per cent if Trump was to win.However, it has now settled to around 0.2 per cent higher since President Trump made his acceptance speech.Alexandra Russell-Oliver, an analyst from currency firm Caxton FX, said: “The pound rose around 1.5 per cent against the US dollar on the initial shock, while sterling fell against the euro.“The euro can act as a safe haven in times of uncertainty.
