A decision by Facebook‘s independent oversight board to keep former US President Donald Trump's accounts blocked could have consequences for politicians around the globe. In a widely-expected verdict , the panel said Wednesday that the company had done the right thing by taking down Trump's account after the January 6 riot of the US Capitol and ruled that the ban should hold — at least for now. DW's chief technology correspondent Janosch Delcker But the experts also voiced harsh criticism of Facebook: While suspending Trump's account had been the right move, the tech giant had been wrong in banning him indefinitely without clear criteria for when — if ever — his account would be restored, they said. Within six months, they added, the firm should reassess the case and come up with a final decision on what to do with the former president's account. It was a clever move, putting the ball back in the company's court and forcing Facebook to produce clearer rules for … [Read more...] about Opinion: Trump’s Facebook ban could have global impact
Plummeting Conservative opinion poll leads suggest that Boris Johnson is wrong – voters do care about Tory sleaze. And they resent that a selfish, cash-for-curtains Prime Minister appeared to feather his own nest while they feared for lives and livelihoods. Who initially paid for his £800-a-roll gold wallpaper? Why did a PM on £157,372, with the keys to two rent-free homes, think he can’t live on less than £300,000, reportedly seeking wealthy sponsors for a nanny and personal trainer? These are important questions the public want answers to. This isn’t just about the dishonesty of a leader who secretly puts himself in a position where powerful rich moguls may be able to seek favours. It’s also an issue of a privileged charlatan looking after himself instead of the country. The egotistical Johnson successfully built an unprincipled career on doing what’s best for him, including backing Brexit in order to become PM, when the twister must have known Britain was better … [Read more...] about Kevin Maguire: ‘Voters care about Tory sleaze – and it will be clear in Thursday’s election’

But efforts so far have stalled – and a bid for an agreement with Donald Trump's White House flopped before he was ousted from office. Asked about a pact, Secretary of State Antony Blinken fuelled hopes a deal between America and Britain could be revived. He said: “I am, I was, hopefully very positive because there is no closer relationship. "And as we are grappling with problems, challenges, opportunities around the world, I find from my many conversations, many engagements with my counterpart Dominic Raab – also getting a chance to spend some time with the Prime Minister yesterday – that our two countries are profoundly in sync.
