When he edited the Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie used to throw open his office door and bellow this at the newsroom when the paper had got a story wrong. It came from the northern endurance sport of ferret-legging: a pair of razor-toothed ferrets are put down your trousers — no underwear allowed. The Sun would call the ferrets off some hapless public figure and go into full reverse without apology or explanation. If we in the media have spent the past two years getting the Trump-Russia story wrong, simply pulling a reverse ferret now would not be enough. There would have to be something more. But is a mea culpa required? Perhaps. Perhaps not. On Friday, the special counsel, Robert Mueller, handed in his report on whether the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia. The Department of Justice told reporters there would be no more indictments, of … [Read more...] about How did the media get the Trump-Russia story so wrong?

opinion Michael J. Stern Opinion contributor Published 3:55 PM EDT Mar 25, 2019 Many people are shocked that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation “did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.” This soon-to-be infamous quotation will forever rankle all who recoiled at the sight of President Donald Trump cheating on Melania with Russia. But it’s not exactly as it sounds. Mueller conclusively found that the Russian government interfered with the 2016 American presidential election. In order for Mueller to have brought conspiracy charges, he needed to find a clear agreement between the Trump campaign and Russia to jointly interfere with the election. No clear agreement, no indictment. There are a lot of sleazy things the Trump campaign did that might not satisfy the demanding legal … [Read more...] about No Mueller Trump-Russia indictments doesn’t mean no evidence or danger

Trump spoke loudly over Acosta and tried to shut him down by demanding he hand over the microphone. "That's enough," Trump said repeatedly as Acosta continued to try and ask his questions. When a White House aide attempted to take the mic from him, Acosta yanked it back. "On the Russia investigation, are you concerned that you may .,, ?" Acosta said before Trump interrupted him. Donald Trump has launched an extraordinary tirade against a reporter during a press conference following the midterm elections. The US president ordered the journalist to put down his microphone and “just sit down”. The row began following a question about the migrant caravan approaching the US, when Mr Trump was asked by CNN’s Jim Acosta if he thought he had “demonised” migrants by calling the group an “invasion”. “I think you should let me run the country, you run CNN, and if you did it well, your ratings would be much better,” the Republican said. After Mr Acosta attempted to follow up his question with a second on Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, Mr Trump added, pointing angrily: “That’s enough. That’s enough. That’s enough. Excuse me, that’s enough.” Mr Trump said he was “not concerned about anything” because the investigation was “a hoax”.
