Russians defy crackdown to find small ways of protesting Ukraine war

July 6, 2022 by www.euronews.com

Despite Moscow's attempts to stem any dissent against its invasion of Ukraine, some Russians are continuing to protest -- even if it means facing draconian punishment for the most benign acts of opposition. Some have paid a heavy price for their acts of protest. In the early days of the war in February, authorities moved quickly to quash demonstrations, arresting people who marched or even held blank signs, balloons in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, or other oblique references to the conflict. Critical media outlets were shut down as the government sought to control the narrative. Political opponents were singled out by President Vladimir Putin or commentators on state-run TV. What happens if Boris Johnson resigns or is sacked – rules and process explained

Boris Johnson’s leadership is once again dangling by a thread after the bombshell resignations of his Chancellor and Health Secretary. Once-loyal MPs such as Sally-Ann Hart and Jonathan Gullis also joined the chorus turning on the PM, weeks after voting for him. And bookies tonight suspended betting on the Prime Minister being sent packing. Mr Johnson has styled things out before and with most of his other Cabinet ministers loyally backing him, he could try to stay. But if he is forced to quit by the “men in grey suits” in his party, here’s how the process would work. What happens if Boris Johnson resigns? Tory MPs and members hold a leadership contest to choose a new leader - and therefore the new Prime Minister, without an election. This happened in 2019, when Theresa May resigned after months of backbiting. The exact rules of each Tory leadership contest vary, but there are two stages and the process takes a couple of months. First, Tory MPs whittle the … [Read more...] about What happens if Boris Johnson resigns or is sacked – rules and process explained

By Iain Watson Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing After a wave of high profile resignations, Number 10 will be keen to say they have stabilised the ship - there is a new chancellor, with a new approach, a new health secretary and a new education secretary. One of Boris Johnson's allies claimed that Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid had failed to "tap up" support from other cabinet ministers, before announcing their resignations on Tuesday evening, although one more minister has yet to make his intentions clear. The PM's ally says he will weather this storm - but the political waters remain very choppy. Some of Mr Johnson's Conservative critics - including still-serving ministers - think he is holed beneath the water line. If - and I stress if - his premiership does go under, how might it happen? Further resignations The first possibility … [Read more...] about How might Boris Johnson be removed as PM?
