Boy who led a neo-Nazi cell from his grandmother’s cottage in UK after joining far-right forum age 13 becomes Britain’s youngest convicted terrorist
A schoolboy has become the UK's youngest terrorist after admitting offences from as young as 13, including masterminding a British far-right extremist cell from his grandmother's cottage. The child - who told investigators he was just trying to 'look cool' - ran the UK branch of the Feuerkrieg Division until July 2019. Counter-terror police learned of a British-based FKD 'unit' operating on the internet and launched a huge investigation to find out who was in the cell. Against the backdrop of Met assistant commissioner Neil Basu's insisting far-right terror was Britain's fastest growing threat, they managed to dismantle the network. Then after learning of the chatter between members they raided the cottage in Cornwall, worried the teenager could be building a weapon. Instead they found a computer and mobile packed with far-right material, a nazi flag and the extremist codes '14' and 88', which are codes for Heil Hitler, due to the numbers corresponding alphabet letters, … [Read more...] about Boy who led a neo-Nazi cell from his grandmother’s cottage in UK after joining far-right forum age 13 becomes Britain’s youngest convicted terrorist
TripAdvisor reveals the world’s best beaches – and Bournemouth is No.5 in Europe
TRIPADVISOR has revealed the best beaches in the world for 2021 - and two in the UK have made the list for Europe. Bournemouth beach and Porthminster beach in St Ives, Cornwall, made the top ten, coming in at 5th and 10th, respectively. This is up from sixth place in TripAdvisor's 2019 awards . Perranporth Beach, also in Cornwall, came in 16th place while Filey Beach in Scarborough, North Yorks., ranked 18th. Beaches are ranked over 12 months, factoring in reviews and ratings for each beach, as well as "saves" from TripAdvisor users, due to the lack of travel due to the pandemic. While no UK beaches made the top 10 in the world, Spiaggia dei Conigli in Italy was in 8th place for the second year running , while being voted the best in Europe. TripAdvisor Vice President Christine Maguire said: "Your last trip to the beach probably feels like a lifetime ago, but with vaccine programs rolling out worldwide, safely making that beach getaway a reality just might be in … [Read more...] about TripAdvisor reveals the world’s best beaches – and Bournemouth is No.5 in Europe
Pacific islands’ alliance – how China is using rifts to its advantage
The Pacific Islands Forum – the region's most influential body that is long supported by Japan , the United States, Australia and New Zealand – is on the brink of collapsing after five of the 18 member states announced their withdrawal in a dispute over the leadership of the organization. The resignations of the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Kiribati have triggered concern in allied countries as the breakup of the regional bloc could leave some states vulnerable to approaches from Beijing and deepen geopolitical and economic rivalries that are already emerging. Washington, Tokyo, Wellington and Canberra point out that China has deep pockets and has already been busy providing loans and development assistance across the region in return for access to resources, markets or infrastructure facilities. The crisis in the forum began in early February, when Henry Puna, the former prime minister of the Cook Islands, was appointed secretary … [Read more...] about Pacific islands’ alliance – how China is using rifts to its advantage
Myanmar’s Hunger Games protests: Demonstrators raise their hands in three-finger salute in gesture of rebellion inspired by Hollywood film as thousands take to streets in response to military coup
Tens of thousands of anti-coup protesters have poured back onto the streets of Myanmar on Sunday, raising their hands in a three-fingered salute during the second day of mass demonstrations against the military takeover. The gesture is a symbol of resistance inspired by the Hunger Games film franchise, which takes place in a dystopian world whose characters live under a brutal totalitarian government that severely restricts their rights. The salute was first taken up by Thai protesters opposing a 2014 military coup and has been a noticeable feature of pro-democracy demonstrations in the country ever since, including mass rallies last year. Myanmarese protesters have now adopted the symbol of resistance at huge demonstrations against last Monday's arrest of de-facto civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other top officials. Armed police clashed with a crowd in the southeastern town of Myawaddy, as live video published on Facebook showed shots were heard as police tried … [Read more...] about Myanmar’s Hunger Games protests: Demonstrators raise their hands in three-finger salute in gesture of rebellion inspired by Hollywood film as thousands take to streets in response to military coup
