Manchester Arena attack: City remembers victims of suicide bomb five years on
Manchester has been remembering the 22 victims of the arena bombing five years on from the terrorist attack. People have been paying their respects at events across the city to those who died in the 2017 suicide blast , which also left more than a thousand others injured as they left an Ariana Grande concert. A minute's silence has been held at Victoria station, which is next to the arena, and prayers were being held throughout the day at Manchester Cathedral. The cathedral's bells will toll at 10.31pm to mark the moment of the attack, which happened as mainly youngsters were leaving the venue. Thousands taking part in the Great Manchester Run clapped in memory of those killed, while people were also encouraged to visit the new Glade of Light memorial , which was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier this month . Citizens blast NYPD for “harassing” residents in wake of subway shooting
Following the arrest of New York subway shooting suspect Frank James , citizens have sounded off on social media on how long it took to apprehend him and how police were allegedly going after innocent people. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has praised the New York Police Department for the arrest after Tuesday morning's attack at Brooklyn's 36th Street and Fourth Avenue station, which left 29 people hospitalized, 10 with gunshot wounds. But some New Yorkers are scrutinizing the NYPD , not only because a 30-hour manhunt was needed to apprehend the suspect but also because police allegedly targeted people minding their own business. Whitney Hu is the political director for Churches United for Fair Housing, a grassroots organization that works to improve housing outcomes for low-income, immigrant and working-class individuals. She tweeted Wednesday evening that Sunset Park-goers were "decompressing" when officers from NYPD's 72nd District walked through, only to allegedly stop … [Read more...] about Citizens blast NYPD for “harassing” residents in wake of subway shooting
ICE deports man to a country he’s not from, nor had he ever visited
New York financial consultant Paul Pierrilus was deported to Haiti on Tuesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) although he is not a Haitian national nor has he ever been to the country. An attempt to deport Pierrilus by the administration of former President Donald Trump in January was thwarted with the help of New York Congressman Mondaire Jones and immigration advocates. President Joe Biden called for a moratorium on deportation while ICE conducted an internal policy review in January. A Texas federal judge temporarily blocked Biden's deportation pause. On Tuesday, Pierrilus was picked up by ICE officials and flown to Haiti. "At 3am, my staff woke up to an urgent call. Suddenly, and in the dead of night, ICE was set to deport Rockland County's beloved Paul Pierrilus to Haiti, a country where he has never been," Jones tweeted on Tuesday. "And there was nothing we could do to stop it." Pierrilus was born in the French Caribbean territory of Saint … [Read more...] about ICE deports man to a country he’s not from, nor had he ever visited

Monkeypox: Berlin records first cases of rare virus
At least two people have tested positive for monkeypox in Berlin, authorities said on Saturday, warning that more cases would likely emerge over the next few days. The rare infectious disease, which causes distinctive pustules but is rarely fatal, is endemic to parts of Central and Western Africa. The scoop on ice cream
When it comes to ice cream, Manish Vora knows the scoop. "There's nothing that makes more people happy than ice cream on a day-to-day basis," he said. But what makes Vora happy is the ice cream scooper. "They really are things of art," he told correspondent Susan Spencer. "There's brilliance in the simplicity of this. It's something that is so utilitarian but so timeless, still is a beautiful object." At the Museum of Ice Cream in New York City, which Vora co-founded, proud scoopers stand eight feet tall in a sort of Willy Wonka-style mini-theme park, complete with a pool of giant sprinkles. But back to the scooper: The design we know and love today, with its built-in scraper, is from 1897. African American businessman and inventor Alfred Cralle dreamed it up, and got a patent for it. "Alfred Cralle is our Thomas Edison at the Museum of Ice Cream," said Vora. And why not? To his genius, we owe the perfect scoop of ice cream. Spencer asked, "Why does it matter if ice cream … [Read more...] about The scoop on ice cream
